Best Mee Pok Stall

Mee Pok King at Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok

14288.jpg

If the name sounds like a mouthful, that's because the stall had wanted to pinch some 'fame' from the old Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok.

But it didn't need that in recent years as owner Lim Kim Heong, who used to work for that famous Mee Pok in Siglap, has carved a name for himself after perfecting his recipe.

Many said his Mee Pok tasted better than that of his old master who runs Ah Lim Mee Pok in Jalan Tua Kong.

Then it was Mr Lim's turn to teach his brother, who runs at stall in a coffeeshop in Figaro Street, off Jalan Tua Kong as if to checkmate the old man.

The best version is done by Mr Lim Kim Heong, and some people even call him Mee Pok King after his noodles were lauded in the Yummy King TV programme.

I like his fine balance of hot chilli sauce, lard and vinegar blend and its overall sharp kick. And I relish more chilli sauce when hankering for an explosive thrill to spice up an somnolent afternoon.

The noodles were springy while the other ingredients were relatively fresh. I wished the fishballs were hand-made though.

A clever blend of black and white vinegars managed to capture the sharp and unique old-world zing which is missing in many Mee Pok today.

What is worse is when their chilli sauce is overwhelmed by prawny belachan. I don't even call it Mee Pok - I'd name it Sambal Belachan Mee.

There were times when I found Lau Lim Mee Pok lacking in flavour or losing the sharpness of the vinegars.

But it's still far better than another Mee Pok in a coffeeshop located next to the entrance of the carpark.

Mr Lim also runs the coffeeshop next door - the coffee's not bad too.

Rating: 7 to 7.5/10

Can I assume the best mee pok stall is also the best mee kia (aka yew mee) stall?

I never like mee pok. I find them chewy, chunky and not crispy.

I like Tai Wah mincemeat noodle at Bestway Building. The old man is one of the very few who knows how to control the heat and timing of cooking his noodle.

still prefer the Mee Pok in this stall as compared to its Mee Kia.

I have tried Tai Wah but still find this the best. The Chilli is power but must get ready to wait 30mins for your noodle as it can be packed.

Its price has increased over the years, now it is at $3.50, $4.50 and $5.50.

To have a decent portion, you have to buy the $4.50.:(

Nice food near my area seems to close early. The Tampines round market also becomes a dead place after 3pm.

Bro, the Tampines Round Market's food not bad... Used to go there and eat when I'm still staying with my parents back then.. If you live at Tampines, try dropping by this hawker centre at Bedok North.. Its is located near to the Bedok police station.. Good food, good crowd too.. Used to go there with my wife during courtship time and most of its stalls close quite a late.. Some stalls are even open till 2 am..

Hi brother,
Yes, I noticed that they have some good and nice stalls there. I just tried the fish head hotpot with my wife on Sat evening. Their business is good. I love the soup. But its a little pricey though. $25 for a small plate of promfret fish meat, together with a hotpot of soup, veggies. They use charcoal for the hotpot.

Yeah, just 3 weeks. Trying to get used to the place. Seems that there are many nice food around. Tampines round market, Simpang Bedok, Bedok North, the small hawker centre near Bedok Camp.

Good for you Bro... Tampines is a good place for foodies... but too bad its Mabok Tan's stronghold..

For Muslim food, try goin to those Malay coffeshops at Blk 201 or at St 45... The Malay food there is well known among Tampines residents.. If you the late nite type, try catchin a bus from Tampines to Changi Village or if you got a car, then do drive there for dinner or late nite supper.. Changi Village is quite near to Tampines... maybe 20 mins bus trip or 10 mins drive.. Do check out those food at Changi Village hawker centre or those 24 hr coffeeshops located there.. Weekend, holiday nites will be packed with picnic goers and campers... Ample choices of food available...

Simpang Bedok one lives up to it's fame....many off shoots haven tried all yet.
Used to have one in a HDB block coffeeshop in lengkok tiga....think that was in the same lineage.

There is one in bukit merah view hawker center with it's trademark small fish balls and optional fish cakes.
Lots of lard, yummy

The bak chor mee pok at the coffeeshop downstairs of WP HQ is also not bad. Cannot say best, but not bad. Reasonable price at S$3 with reasonable taste and reasonable portion too. Also good next door is Malaysian-style yong tau foo. Across the road is the famous Sungei Road laksa, still S$2 and just as delicious.
