very tough these days in u.s. swimming programs to even use painkillers, so swimmers rely on old chink method of suction cups to ease pain and relax muscles. you can see suction marks on back of phelps and many other u.s. swimmers. in uc berkeley and stanford, where olympic gold medal winners are groomed and trained they rely much on natural means of healing....including tui na, acupuncture, and suction cups. very atas now in bay area for professional sports. uc berkeley alone contributed 23 swimmers to the u.s. olympic team. stanford not far behind, and the biggest name is ledecky.

I pointed out two years ago what Schooling's clueless parents, swim coaches and most Singaporeans did not know, i.e. that the root cause of Schooling's failure was because he was short. (Note I used "was" and not "is"). This is not an opinion. It is a matter of science.
His uncle, the gragok media chief of the Government whom SPH is dead scared off, logs onto this forum regularly under the nick of ***** (he has asked me not to reveal it). He rarely posts anything but took note of what I wrote and pushed his brother to have Schooling undergo growth hormone treatment. The paediatric endocrinologist settled on somatropin injections as I advised the uncle that somatropin is the safest amongst the various growth hormornes available as it is not on the banned list.
Schooling was 1.7m two years ago when I pointed out that he would always be a loser because he has inherited his mum's short genes. He has since grown 11.3 cm taller after undergoing GH treatment. He is now 1.81m. As I told his uncle, this would make him competitive and what I said is proven by his performance at this Olympics.
Credit and kudos to his uncle and the Schooling family for taking note of what I wrote and for heeding my advice. There are many factors that make Schoolings a record breaking champion. However, most of these factors can be obtained with money, even to the extend of physical growth. What has been missing in the comments, is the person Schoolings, himself. His mental strength. I am sure the top US coaches only take in swimmers who has the ability to swim well. If that is all it needs to win, then champions can be easily trained.
In my view, Schoolings is special. He has the natural endowment for the making of a champion, not just physically but more importantly, his mental power. In such high level competition, the top few athletes are nearly equal. What decides the winner is the one with the ability to stay focus, ensuring that every stroke is done to perfection throughout the race. One slight miss and the prize is gone. Only a calm focus mind can do that. Next is the ability to summon the last ounce of energy to give his all at the end. All competitors are like dying near the end. The one who can find the little extra will be the winner.
So whatever others may like to say about things like Phelps giving chance, etc, I firmly believes that Schoolings make it because he has the mental power. The perseverance to train hard, the calmness and focus produce perfect stroke after stroke, and finally, the ability to produce that last burst. Athletes who do not have such mental capability resort to drugs to win.
