This episode reminded me of my CO during NS. He was super fit, super on and super strict. He demanded everybody to be able to do at least 10 chin-ups. Those who can't must meet him before lunch to practice. He would pop in even at odd hours on weekend to check on the guards and DO. Those caught not doing their duty properly can expect to burn many more weekends.
He had a nasty shock during a Bn Prof Test. We were in defence position and as usual he conducted morning check on the men's foxhole and shelter after the first night. Everything was fine till he came to this chap who's position was in a mess. He asked the soldier why but was bombarded with a barrage of hokkien superlatives, in from of the other staff officers and OCs. The CO calmly ordered him to be locked in the field cell for POW and walked off, expressionless.
After the exercise, we expected this chap to be court martial. To our surprise, he was let off with a stern warning and personal counseling. I found out later that this chap is a hardcore who had no fear for detention as he had been in and out of it so very often. Since the only damage was "lost of face" in from of his subordinates , the CO took the gamble of using the soft approach, hoping that it might work to make him a better person. After all, if he didn't change, there would be ample opportunities to throw him in detention barrack. True enough, this chap did not go around boasting that he had f the CO and got off scot free. Even if he hinted so, his fellow hardcore kakis would tick him off for being ungrateful. Most importantly, the CO was no longer just being feared by the men but he had won their respect. Nothing can't be done by the Bn, as long as the CO said so.
