Effectively speaking, as long as you declare something unacceptable to a segment of the population, you lose votes on the whole.

The people who declare support for you were your supporters. The people who can accept gays but are PAP supporters won't turn to you anyway. The people who were your supporters but find they cannot acceptable a gay will turn away from you. There won't be anyone who did not support you now suddenly support you when they know you are gay.

This is why Yaw and Palmer had to go (for Yaw even if he came clean). People who can accept their infidelity will not use it as a judgement call, but those who cannot will turn away from them.

For SDP's case, they already have all the pink and liberal votes. Its the swing voter that will get turned off, if the swing voter is of conservative persuasion. Sometimes you don't even have to be a conservative. Some fellows just hate gays but are perfectly liberal about other aspects of life.
