Now switch it around. Suppose it was china that did the pop performance in their opening and closing ceremonies while the brits followed the china route and put a performance just like china's in 2008 what do you think he would have written? Would you have then changed it around and said china actually had the better performance? Of course not. Not in a 1000 years, he would still have said the UK's is better.

China could not do it even if they wanted to....where to find world class music acts? The Brits had a big influence on music.......everything from punk, pop to broadway....infact i feel there were a long list of great names missing from the lineup.
Beijing was grander and 100X better than NDP...but not much different from the run of the mill type of ceremonies.....UK one on the other hand was totally refreshing.
Even if China had wanted to and rope in HK music and movie industry, they could appeal to a global audience....remembered stars Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Alam Tam and the likes on stage toward the end of Beijing's ceremony and they were machiam calefare standing at one corner of the stage totally lost....
