A full-time national serviceman (NSF) stole a motorcycle to ride home after he missed his last bus, a court heard yesterday.

Shafiq Shah Husin Shah, 19 - who was banned from the road at the time - was jailed for 12 months and given a 24-month driving ban.

The sentence was also for an unrelated charge of causing hurt to NSF Muhammad Haziq Ali, 22.

A Community Court heard that Shafiq was in Yishun Avenue 5 on Dec 5 when he realised that he had missed the last bus home.

At about 2am, he walked to a nearby Housing Board carpark to look for a motorcycle that he could start with a Yamaha key he found some time ago. He found a motorcycle worth about $2,800 that belonged to Mr Muhammad Suffee Mosnee, 20, and rode off.

The assault case occurred on Sept 29 last year after Shafiq's friend, Mr Syed Omar Syed Salim, 20, complained about being bullied by his platoon mate, Mr Haziq.

Mr Omar and two of his brothers joined Shafiq in a group which went to confront Mr Haziq, who was with other platoon mates in the McDonald's branch at White Sands mall. One of the brothers grabbed Mr Haziq's army uniform and shouted at him but the soldier broke free and ran out.

He was chased by Shafiq who tripped him up and sat on his chest, then rained eight punches on him. Two of the punches missed and hit the floor, causing Shafiq to fracture his hand.

In 2011, Shafiq was given probation for motor vehicle theft and other offences.

The following year, he was convicted of a similar crime and of driving without insurance coverage. He was jailed for six months and fined $600.
