It shows the superiority (or popularity) of Cantonese culture. It's the same reason why youths study the Korean language these days: K-pop and K-drama are very popular.

For the longest time, Malaysian Chinese had no choice but to watch Chinese shows in Cantonese as produced by the Hongkies. If you don't understand Cantonese what entertainment can you have? Taiwan didn't make a big effort to produce and sell shows in Hokkien and when they did they traitorously did it in Mandarin instead.
It was either watch in Cantonese or watch pontianak over and over again.
