WP's Poh Eng Huat vs PAP's Desmond Choo!

A day after the Writ of Election was issued for the Hougang by-election, political parties contesting the polls introduced their candidates at separate media conferences on Thursday.

The People's Action Party unveiled its candidate Desmond Choo, while the Workers' Party named Png Eng Huat as its candidate.

This will be Mr Choo's second attempt in the single-seat ward contest.

PAP's Second Assistant Secretary-General Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who introduced Mr Choo as the party's candidate, emphasised that the by-election is a local contest about who the voters want as their representative in Parliament.

Mr Tharman, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said Mr Choo did not leave after the General Election but worked even harder on the ground, and over the past year has connected with many people through weekly coffee sessions and regular house visits.

Mr Choo pledged to fight as a better choice for voters, and to "always be there for them".

He said the PAP has a long-term plan and commitment to Hougang and also promised to mobilise support and resources, as well as take real and concrete steps to help residents with their problems.

"Our spirit is strong and we will fight to convince voters that we are the better choice for their long-term future," Mr Choo said.

WP's Secretary-General Low Thia Kiang, who introduced Mr Png as the party's candidate in a media conference in the afternoon, said the party will fight the election to the best of its ability.

He described Mr Png as mature and the "right candidate" for the by-election.

Responding to an earlier comment by Mr Tharman that the by-election is a local contest, Mr Low said this will depend on the issues that will be brought up.

"But I believe it can never be so clear-cut whether it's local or national. While we've noted DPM's comments on what the PAP wants to do, we have to see what comes out before we respond to whether it's local or national," he said.

Mr Png, the youngest in a family of six, said he was brought up in a "rough neighbourhood".

He has been involved in Hougang since 2006, looking after the welfare of needy residents.

The by-election was called after the Hougang seat was vacated by WP's Yaw Shin Leong after he was expelled from the party in February.

Personally, I think Png Eng Huat will get a landslide victory... Hougang has been a loyal supporter of WP... it is just too bad Yaw couldn't cover up his personal life, due to his inexperience in politics... everyone(male) have a dick... and those who have a dick simply just want a wet pussy to stick inside... nothing wrong about that, that's human nature.

Plain water vs the old wine. Which would you choose?

Which is healthier?? plain water that kept too long goes flat & bland, or old wine stored in good skins, that stand the test of time. You think the people are stupid to go for processed "newater"?

Like me, Eng Huat has worked in NTUC before, not on the insurance or supermarket side but on the business enterprise side. His qualification and experience are impeccable and even untouchable by PAP. He has been in Hougang Constituency Committee for years. Shin Leong was given the Hougang candidacy 2011 over him because Shin Leong has been there even longer and Eng Huat was posted to stand in East Coast GRC with Eric, Glenda etc. I was helping them until WP confirmed to contesting M-K GRC and I of course I wanted to be transferred to help out WP in my home GRC. You're right, every picture tells a story and every man has a dick looking for a pussy. In the case of Shin Leong, he has done nothing wrong politically or in line of duty until he ran away without explanation or accounting, even a confession and apology would have done himself, the party and all concerned a great favor, but he chose not to. That was the disappointment.

Don't despair, probably he will wait for the right time to return and kneel before HG residents on election day. That should probably up WP winning margin by many notch. Afterall, human are made to err, and he promised HG residents that he will continue to serve them wholeheartedly not as MP, but as volunteers in very low profile to his old time party. He will not foresake HG resident just because PAP played petty politics resulted in him wanting to escape briefly not to be constantly hounded by braddel prostitues.

Like I said, don't vote for anybody who is not Desmond Choo or Poh Eng Huat.

You're going to be disappointed, Hougang is and had been the hammer's stronghold. Candidate is not important, this contest is nothing like Potong Pasir, believe it or not.

We live in a time where extramarital affairs are deemed as some kind of character flaw, let alone someone holding political office. Confession and apology while it may do favor, it can and may also bring about ugliness that is going to do more harm than good. Why come clean when silence is golden.

Just a little late night history storytelling. All Anson, Potong Pasir and Hougang takeovers by opposition happened by accident of PAP's own doing. Chiam See Tong started with contesting Cairnhill and it was gerrymandered unrecognizably until CST didn't really know how to map out his walkabouts. Then came the PP redevelopment with a lot of discontent. CST spotted the opportunity and went in. He failed at first try against Howe Yoon Chong but succeeded at second try against Mah Bow Tan, thanks to the big loud mouth of Lee Kuan Yew insulting everybody without straight A's on O and A Level certs and a prestigious degree.

CST kept PP until last year, as we all know. That's a remarkable 27 years, longer than a quarter of a century, even through internal party coup and change of party.

Anson was also an accidental windfall. Pres. Benjamin Sheares passed away and a new pres. was required. Devan Nair was Anson incumbent with above 80% majority. He was selected to be the new pres. as Anson was considered infallible at that kind of margin, GCT (PAP campaign manager then) assured LKY. However, they all lost touch with the grounds as those were years when HDB stepped up converting rental flats to sale flats increasing the burdens of the lower incomes already struggling with how the hell to increase incomes to meet the upped payments from rents to mortgages. JBJ promptly pointed that out and they promptly showed JBJ their thumbs up and LKY their middle fingers. Now, how's that for those who're accusing Sinkies of being politically apathetic or cowards?

After LKY strong-armed the disqualification of JBJ from Parliament, LTK was the Asst. Sec-Gen. assigned with the task of winning back Anson for WP. He looked even an stronger opponent than JBJ for he's younger and he's Chinese. LKY saw no way out and gerrymandered Anson into Tiong Bahru GRC. LTK still constested (Gopalan Nair was in that team). They scored above 40% but not above 50. Still too close for comfort, in the next GE, LKY redrew the whole Tiong Bahru GRC (Anson inclusive) into his own Tanjong Pagar GRC. What the shit? LTK being Teochew has friends in Hougang who recommended that he might as well forget it and contest solo Hougang SMC. LTK went a round around there with them and the reception was good. He continued to work on it and the rest is history.

This man LTK though his politics are not aggressive enough, I think he holds the hammer in good stead. I believe Hougang residents identify with not just him but also the hammer, he went to Aljunied and yet Yaw managed an impressive victory the last time around. I think the papzis is expecting turncoat to swing votes, they maybe in for another surprise, scandal or not.

No election in Singapore is local. With the PAP dominating the political scene, you can only send a strong message to the government by reducing the PAP dominance. Thus, it is essential that the Opposition gets more MPs into Parliament.
The PAP candidate for this by-election can afford to work the ground because he gets a hefty salary from the PAP controlled trade union. What does Choo do in the trade union to justify his high salary in the trade union? Union dues are used to support PAP politicians. Those who are just MPs get the union salary to boost their overall incomes. Those who are waiting to contest to get into parliament gets the union salaries to sustain them while they work the ground.
We need to kick more PAP politicians out of their cushy lifestyle. These PAP politicians are using worker's money for their own benefit. Shame on them.
