SM Goh Chok Tong

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has come out to criticize Singaporeans¡¯ backlash to floods. In a forum for the contributors of the state run REACH portal, SM Goh said: ¡°How many of you followed the latest tragic events in Japan with the tsunami¡and then put into context our floods in Singapore against that kind of disaster. I am not saying we shouldn¡¯t do anything about the flood. But the amount of noise you made with just sporadic flood compared to the Japanese.¡±
The Japanese events are a double natural calamities (earthquake and tsunami) in which there is no human involvement. The heavy rains in Singapore is equally a natural phenomenon though it is not a calamity by any measure. Singaporeans did not blame PAP for heavy downpour. What is wrong with Senior Minister Goh?
Singaporeans¡¯ backlash at PAP was about the floods which were not due to the heavy rains per se but the catastrophic incompetency of PAP agencies to keep the preventive systems functioning orderly.
Senior Minister Goh has totally crossed the line in criticizing Singaporeans. It is clear that he is more interested to defend the mistakes of his government than to listen to the voices of Singaporeans. More importantly it is very insensitive of Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong to compare Singaporeans to Japanese and claim we must be like Japanese.
If he will like us to be like Japanese people, then PAP should be like Japanese politicians.
1. When Mas Selamat, the most dangerous terrorist in Singapore escaped state detention, Wong Kang Seng should have resigned.
2. When the worst food poisoning at Geylang Serai Market occurred killing 2 Singaporeans and when it became clear it was due to rat infestation and NEA not tackling such issues from beginning, Yaacob Ibrahim should have resigned.
3. When the above floods occurred due to PUB failing in its preventive system, Yaacob Ibrahim should have again resigned.
4. When YOG ran into so many failures, Vivian Balakrishnan should have resigned.
5. When today Singapore get stuck in a housing cirsis thanks to Mah Bow Tan failing to keep his housing policy in tune with immigration policy, he should be resigning.
6. When Lee Kuan Yew makes such racist comments about Malays, he should have
resigned. When he lost an alarming undisclosed amount of money in GIC, he should have resigned as chairman of GIC. When he lost enormous money in Suzhou, he should have resigned then.
7. When today our transportation faces total setbacks in efficiency thanks to Raymond
Lim¡¯s transport policy being not consistent to immigration policy, he should be resigning.
8. When Ho Ching lost $50billion, she should have resigned.
9. When Goh Chok Tong¡¯s privatisation programs of the 1990s led to government agencies becoming government owned companies, which led to escalation of prices till today and public companies becoming monopolies, today Goh Chok Tong himself deserve to resign
If anyone who should need to emulate the Japanese, it is the PAP. If anyone who should stop whining, it should also be the PAP.

He is trying to be too smart for his own good. He must think that Singaporeans especially the young are not intelligent. In the first place, Singapore is not in the zone and neither does have a history of this nature.

Sure we have had floods in our earlier history and thus kampung houses in the Peninsula were built on stilts. It certainly was not to keep chickens underneath.

People were upset because they paid a fortune to build the enclosed bay and claimed that it was to alleviate floods. When it did flood in a major way they held a press conference and claimed that debris block in Stamford canal was the result and that contractors were cleaning it and there will be no major floods. It was not to be. Orchard never had such floods in its history.

The PAP have never learnt to say sorry and never will. Really arrogant.

It is so obvious the SM is way off the mark and therefore talking rubbish! These are trying times for the Japanese and yet he couldn't resist scoring cheap political points. Like a know-all father talking to the son.So preachy! Floods in Bukit Timah and Orchard Road being compared to the Japanese tsunami generated by the huge 8.9 tremblor. Come on SM; get your facts right! We have every right to complain because you have made so many boasts and promises; one being that floods will become a thing of the past because of the genius and ingenuity of the PAP. When one remembers the obscene salaries commanded by your elitist colleagues, one couldn't help but be cynical! Are you out-of-sync with reality? Being wooden is really bad enough but to be deadwood is something else!

In a nutshell, our leaders are very ordinary people. Nothing outstanding about them to deserve better than world class salaries. Similar to paying BPL wages to S-League players.

I think there is a lovely word in Japanese called Harakiri, to replace the word "resign" in the first post. We should learn to be accountable -just like them.

Ask him to compare his salary with others country then talk.

What we should learn from the Japanese is to resist importing ft to avoid diluting the homogenous society which they took many years to build. Look how united and loyal the Japanese are to their country. It is this cohesion that help them overcome all odds. This is something totally lagging in sg.

one thing that struck me...despite the massive quake, the Japanese people remain calm and queue up for bus./ cabs...

I wonder, if Singapore, mass stampede liao?

I take chance to shoot Ah Nehs. :p

Remember we used to have those Malay or Peranakan house, where it is raised with a void deck underneath, especilly around Eunos Area & Balestier Rd area, those places used to flood in the past. Why do you think they built the empty space below.

SINgaporeans must be having 'empty spaces' in their head to pay for an expensive minister who constantly insult our intelligence, the rest are not mush better either. We have the most expensive political cabinet on planet earth.:p

Wait till the PAP is deposed by the Opposition, then we'll see whether it can be as stoic as the Liberal Party when it was ousted by the DPJ.

Can't be for nothing that after 54 years in power, the Liberal Party lost its right to govern. The Jap people knew how to give the new PM a chance. Singapore too will give any new Opp party PM a chance even if it flooded 1 in 20 days.

Best of all, Nato Kan never asked for millions to be the PM. He just did it.

can't even know to differentiate between luxury goods and necessity goods?

It is not surprise that unable to differentiate between floods and Tsunamis.

Also, don't know how to compare their salary and salary of their counterpart around the world.

Bet with you, he can not even differentiate bewteen a peanut & a groundnut; and we are paying with our blood, sweat & tears, toiling for wages, to pay for a politician like that.:p

I cant imagine what would the Japanese thought of Singapore if these comments by SM Goh were to appear in japanese media.

To compare a natural disaster to a man-made failure is like...i cant even find any comparison to begin with.

Think this is something the oppostion can be use as a joke during the coming election.

Maybe mr brown should do a blog on this as well. Could be very very funny.

after reading all these, i feel damned sad. don't know how to face my japanese guests.

He is really Senile. Pui. I make sure will not vote for him this timw round.

MEDIACORP has apologised over the email incident (it doesn't matter it doesn't sound sincere at all)... should'nt Mr Goh apologies for his insensitive remarks?
