A 67-year-old woman, who was hit by a bicycle wheel allegedly thrown by a teenage boy from the 14th floor of an HDB block of flats in Eunos Crescent, died in hospital last Friday night.
Madam Mahani Abdullah had undergone emergency spinal surgery at the Singapore General Hospital after the wheel hit her on the head on May 16.
Last Tuesday, while she was in a high dependency ward following the operation, her heart stopped. Doctors managed to resuscitate her, but she slipped into a coma.
After state prosecutors learnt that Madam Mahani's condition had worsened, the charge of a rash act against teenager Abdul Hamid Rahmat, 16, was amended to one of grievous hurt last Friday.

This teenager should have been charged with manslaughter. Causing grievous hurt does not seem to be the appropriate indictment for his reckless and dangerous act. The AGC should amend the charge to send strong deterrent message to all high rise litter killers in SG. Pappies are really hopeless when dealing with crime.

Agreed. And sixteen years old is adult enough to realize the potential danger of such a rash act. I do not know how the courts will come to conclusion on this case, but I have gotten quite tired of hearing charges for minors be reduced because they are minors. A teenager has the ability to think and understand issue more complex than a two or three year old toddler.

Actually such incidents should never occur if the HDB flats are better designed-example the walkways beneath all HDB blocks should be sheltered such that if anybody throw things down, it will hit the shelter, not pedestrians.
However the govt build sheltered walkways to connect blocks (and not in every block) only many years after occupation -as part of upgrading to win votes.
Yet Penang boy Khaw even preached about not turning elections into an auction between political parties promising voters as much “goodies” as they can-talk about flip flop!

The laws are too complex for people to understand. Just impose mandatory death sentence for every crime, then people will get it. You do the crime, you die. Simple to understand, simple to implement, simple all round.

In actual cases, every crime needs to be investigated, every accused person deserves a fair trial and the motive(s) needs to be established before a fair or deserving punishment is meted out. Someone may be killed, but was it premeditated? Was it revenge? Self defence? It is not easy, and there may be cases the lawyer is very glib or screws up the whole case. If it was an accident and the accused just happened to be there and the thing happened, it is not right to label him/her a murderer. If you killed someone who attacked you, should you be sentenced to death? In this time and age, I think it should be innocent until proven guilty. It is not right to swap the page with a wide brush for every similar offence. It is not simple.
