Woman charged for theft again

A WOMAN who has been placed on probation twice before for shoplifting because of her mental disorder, is back in court again for shop theft.

But Goh Lee Yin's case was adjourned to May as her psychiatric report was not ready.

The 30-year-old engineer's lawyer, Mr Choo Si Sen, applied for the adjournment on Friday as he was still waiting for the report from the Institute of Mental Health.

Counsel and Goh asked the court to order the media not to publish her photograph but Community Court Judge Ng Peng Hong rejected it.

Goh, who was previously diagnosed with kleptomania, has been accused of stealing a Gucci dress worth $3,199 from Gucci at Paragon on Dec 16, 2010.

She also allegedly stole a Chanel classic bag worth $4,790 from the Chanel boutique at Ngee Ann City on Feb 24, and a $610 Emporio Armani sweater at Meritus Mandarin Gallery in December 2010.

The maximum penalty for theft in dwelling is a jail term of seven years and a fine.

This isn't her first time anyway. The last time she got in trouble with the law her photo also appeared in this forum, yeah should be this forum not the old one.

Probably in 2008, i'm sure you guys can remember. Back then she was jailed for 1 day which means staying in court for 1 day and then there was a discussion on females being treated better than males and how someone mentioned the judge has a soft spot for females? Something to do with yong pung how or something along those lines. It's only a matter of time she'll be back in court again. If she's let off with a small slap on the wrist she'll just commit theft 1 more time.

what happened to the 3 strikes rule? i think she qualifies for preventive detention (or something.. can't recall the term) without time off for good behaviour?

Woman admits to stealing branded goods

A WOMAN previously diagnosed with an uncontrollable urge to steal tried to leave a boutique after she was caught stealing a $4,790 bag.

A Community Court heard that Chanel store's security sensor alarm sounded when Goh Lee Yin, 30, left without paying for the item at Ngee Ann City on Feb 24 last year. When a staff approached her to check her belongings, Goh surrendered a handbag from a plastic bag and tried to leave but was detained.

Goh pleaded guilty on Thursday to the charge and another theft of a $610 sweater from Emporio Armani boutique at Mertius Mandarin Gallery in December. A third charge of stealing a $3,199 dress at Gucci will be taken into consideration when she is sentenced in July.

Her lawyer Choo Si Sen had asked for a day's jail plus fine each, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Wong Kok Weng urged the court to impose no less than six weeks' jail in total.

DPP Wong gave a background of Goh who was last given 18 months' supervised probation by the High Court in 2007 after dismissing the prosecution's appeal against her one-day and $8,000-fine sentence for theft.

The latest psychiatric report on the former engineer stated that her thefts were 'unlikely to emanate from kleptomania''. Community Court Judge Ng Peng Hong called for a pre-sentence report on July 6. The maximum penalty for theft is seven years and a fine on each charge.
