WINNIPEG: Philippine fast food giant opened its first outlet in Canada on Thursday (Dec 15), with people queuing around the block in the city of Winnipeg.

Hundreds lined up in temperatures hovering around -26°C for a taste of its renowned fried chicken, pineapple-topped burgers and spaghetti, CBC News reported.

Jollibee, which has more than 3,000 outlets across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the United States, said it opened in Winnipeg because of the 60,000 Filipinos that reside in the city.

"The Jollibee family is incredibly excited to break ground in Canada to serve the thousands of Filipino-Canadians and Jollibee fans alike," said Jose Minana, Jollibee's Group President for North America and Foreign Franchise Brands.

"It has been a joy to see the happiness families experience when visiting our locations in the US and we are thrilled to now bring that same feeling into Canada at such a festive time like this."

The fast food company also added it is eyeing an expansion in North America, with more locations planned in the United States, where it has 35 outlets.

"Jollibee coming to Winnipeg is great because I know for my parents and aunts and uncles, and other immigrants, it would definitely be another part of home that's now coming to Winnipeg," Roddy Seradilla, who owns a Filipino restaurant in the city, told CBC News.
