Johor’s Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman said that the state’s rapid transit system (RTS) is likely to link up with the Thomson MRT Line in Singapore.
Mr Ghani told a news briefing that the Thomson Line, which is likely to be completed in 2018, would have a station facing Johor.
‘At the moment, we have to implement the double tracking from Gemas to Johor Baru. The Transport Ministry has issued letters for squatters to be relocated,’ he said.
Mr Ghani also said that a possible development in the future is enhancing communications between Malaysia and Singapore.
He said that as 60,000 to 70,000 people travel from Malaysia to Singapore, it was crucial to have a good rapid transit system to link and connect the two countries.
Other joint efforts include the joint venture between Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings Ltd to develop an iconic wellness township in Iskandar Malaysia, the main southern development corridor in Johor.
Mr Ghani said that work on the wellness township project at a waterfront area in Danga Bay, Iskandar Malaysia, is likely to start this year.
Among other things, the wellness township will offer medical services, holistic wellness services and facilities, and alternative medical treatment.
Mr Ghani also said that Iskandar Malaysia needs a strong domestic investor base to sustain growth momentum.
Iskandar Region Development Authority (IRDA) said that Iskandar Malaysia would maintain almost an equal ratio between domestic and foreign investments, but a strong presence of domestic investors was needed as they are the ones that would stay.
‘At the same time, the presence of foreign investors is also crucial in bringing the latest innovations and creativity which, in turn, will bring in new knowledge,’ said its chief executive, Ismail Ibrahim.
Last year, 52 per cent of investments in Iskandar Malaysia were from local investors, while 48 per cent were foreign investments, he told reporters after a tour of Iskandar Malaysia.
Mr Ismail said that the presence of foreign investors would also create a climate of confidence which in turn would put Malaysia, especially Johor, on the investors’ radar.
Among the foreign brands in Iskandar Malaysia are the renowned international film production company Pinewood Shepperton plc, Chelsea premium outlets and Legoland theme park.
The IRDA is the regulatory authority mandated to plan, promote and facilitate the development of Iskandar Malaysia into a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing, where living, working, business and leisure converge seamlessly.
Mr Ismail said that Iskandar Malaysia aims to attract investments worth RM73 billion (S$30 billion) from 2011 to 2015 as most companies, either local or overseas, are planning to relocate their business.
He said that Iskandar Malaysia is expecting investors from China, South Korea, Japan, India, the Middle East, Europe and North America.
