Why tipping culture wont work in Singapore ?

But in singapore, restaurant owners add 10% service charge to the total bill..........is this a standard practice ?

Can the tipping culture kick starrt and be sustained in Singapore ?

It's a mandatory thing to do for all restaurants, because what if most people don't tip when the 10% svc charge is removed?

That why the restaurant must segment the sitting. Who ever goes to his zone , he must serve. So ...... no chance of choosing customer !

Yes , treatment may differ from different waiter. But it will bring up the overall service level.

Of course restaurant owner will not want to LOSE hold of the 10% generated ! It virtually free ....... ! That why restaurant here in Singapore keep the 10% and keep saying bad things abt tipping.

Old fart ban tipping in the early days because he feared sinkees would be drawn to working as waiters/waitreses as these jobs could pay more than grads.

Pappies want sinkees to work in factories in the late 70s and 80s. Banning tips would discourage sinkees from working in F & B sector. That time F & B sector mostly run by expats/ ex sailors.

Pappies as usual do not want potential tippers to hold back that extra cash, so they decided to reward F & B employers with service charge. Indirectly rewarding themselves through taxes.

Good service is the most important factor in the west. Its in their nature to reward good people with good service.

The tipping culture in the west weeds out the people with bad service from the people that gives good service.

This is a joke right? You are employed to serve everyone that steps in your establishment.

Hey its up to the customers to tip. Thats the beauty of tipping. Right now sinkees have to pay compulsory tips in a form of service charge.

I do not go often to restaurants because of the service charge , why should I pay in ADVANCE for the potentialy GOOD service I have yet to receive.

It all boils down to pappies greed once again. Pappies charge a ridiculous rent to tenant, in return pappies give cheap labour and a little bit on the side in a form of service charge.

In the end the sinkees at the bottom end of the food chain are the ones that suffer.

i agree! SGers don't know what is service. and most SG waiters/tress have low IQ. those in the west will surprise you with their wisecracks and out of box thinking, plus initiative on the job.

this is the good result of tipping. only the good service people survive.

If a tipping culture is to be introduced here, we must first raise the profile of the service industry. Tipping must not be seen as a bribe but a reward for good service.

Unfortunately it's ingrained in our Asian culture to treat service staff as a lower form of human beings

"Tip" is almost a dirty word here. Who gets tipped in sinkapore? KTV and massage girls after performing special services ...
