SINGAPORE: The Health Ministry has moderated the subsidy adjustments for Permanent Residents (PRs) in the lower-income bands.
This is for those in the Class B2 or C inpatient, and those in intermediate and long-term care services (ILTC).
Health Minster Gan Kim Yong said this in a written reply to parliament in response to a question filed by MP Dr Lam Pin Min.
Dr Lam had asked how many low-income PRs will be affected in light of the ministry's recent announcement to revise medical subsidies for PRs. He also asked how the government will assist PRs who may encounter financial difficulties as a result of the change.
Mr Gan said the government is mindful of the impact on lower-income PRs.
He said in 2011, fewer than three per cent of PR patients in the public hospitals' inpatient wards and ILTC institutions sought financial assistance.
Mr Gan said he does not expect the number of PR patients who require financial assistance to increase significantly, given that subsidy revisions were moderated for the lower-income.
He added PR patients who need financial help can approach the medical social workers in the public hospitals and ILTC institutions.
Mr Gan added Long-Term Social Visit Pass Plus (LTVP-Plus) holders receive the same inpatient subsidies as PRs in the public hospitals.
He said both PRs and LTVP-Plus holders are strongly encouraged to purchase sufficient insurance coverage for their healthcare expenses.
Those who are not working can also tap on their spouses' Medisave to purchase Medisave-approved Integrated Shield Plans.
