Historically, when Chinese S'poreans converted to Christianity, they would take a Biblical name during baptism to signify a new beginning. As more S'porean Chinese studied at missionary schools like ACS, SJI, MGS, CHIJ etc. and became Christians, they would later choose names for their children based on the virtues of Biblical figures, hoping their children will grow to possess those traits. Giving a child a "Christian" name in their birth certificates, signifies that the child is being raised in a Christian household and is dedicated to God from birth. Why have non-Christian Chinese S'poreans followed their Christian counterparts in giving themselves adopted Western first names? It has nothing to do with religion so is it about westernisation or personal branding?

for younger sinkies they sound more like nigger names. chantel, saquon, sheniqua, antoine, draymon, etc.

I believe that traditional Chinese names follow a family structure like surname + generation name + personal name. For millennials and Gen Zs, their English name is their primary identity, so choosing an English name allows them to pick an identity that feels uniquely theirs.

LKY took on a Western name Harry, which is not a Christian name. He's also not a Christian.

Most western names that S'poreans call "Christian names" today are in fact, Hebrew names of Jewish origin. Examples include Joseph, Samuel, David, Michael, John, Aaron, Thomas, Matthew, Peter, Simon, James, Philip, Benjamin, Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, Elizabeth etc.

S'porean Malay Muslims also like to give their children Jewish names: Abraham = Ibrahim, David = Daud, Solomon = Sulaiman, Moses = Musa, Aaron = Harun, Joseph = Yusuf, Jacob = Yaakob, Benjamin = Bunyamin, Noah = Nuh, Mary = Maryam.

These are names from the Quran, turd, which shares the same stories and prophetic characters with the Hebrew bible.

Only an imbecile with zero IQ like @superpower aka @superstupid does not know that when a name appears in the Quran, it is the Arabic version of a name of Hebrew origin from the Jewish Bible.

They are not true believer
How can they ever be?

Last time, a colleague mentioned during a conversation that her child complained to him about why all her classmates have Christian names and she doesn't have one.

Because some of the Chinese dialect names sound horrible. That's the way it is.

Many Tiongs do the same, even though their names are pure hanyu pinyin.

some got middle name some more...............................
It is common for parents in Roman Catholic families in S'pore to choose the name of a saint like Francis, Thomas, John, Paul, Peter etc. between the Christian and surname for their children i.e. Timothy Paul Chua.
