Just look at them..practising how to debate with Opposition MPs early. Listen to the script. It's so lame the PAP is just using the platform to espouse its FT policies.. the opposing team was set up to fail yet there you are, to assuage yr nerves, they still won! Why didnt they go with "the PAP is not considering Sinkies' interests at heart "?

LOL! Sinkies dont know what they want! Fuck you PAP, they dont want any more FTs to take away their jobs, homes, lebenstraum et al!

Youths lock horns at Young PAP debate
By Dylan Loh | Posted: 29 October 2011 2034 hrs

SINGAPORE: Foreign competition in Singapore was at the top of young peoples' minds in a debate organised by the People's Action Party's youth wing, the Young PAP.

Two teams of three debaters argued whether government policies are crafted considering Singaporeans first. On one side - the proposition, believe that government policies are made with Singaporeans' interests at the heart. And this includes policies concerning housing and education.

Their opponents naturally disagreed, saying it is impossible to craft policies considering Singaporeans first because Singaporeans do not even know what they want.

Lee Junior, one of the debaters for the opposition, said during the debate: "Citizens want cheap rental flats as long as (it's) not built by them, or foreign workers who are not clogging up the public transport... The government, if it attempts to bend to the needs of Singaporeans, will be akin to a cat chasing a laser pointer."

In turn, the proposition argued that allowing foreign competition in Singapore sharpens Singaporeans.

Shirwin Eu, one of the debaters for the proposition, argued: "We want Singapore to grow. And can we grow internally, can we develop one iPhone, so to speak? Can you invent a Toyota car? Can you produce anything from your own resources, and not forgetting that Singapore - we do not have any natural resources. The only resource we have is our brain."

In the end, the opposition won, getting 17 out of the 25 votes cast.

Previous debates held by the ruling party's youth wing were members-only affairs. There was also no voting process to decide which side won. By throwing in voting and allowing non-members to participate in this debate however, the organisation hopes to reach out to more youths outside the party.

I saw the newsclip and frankly it was a PAP Youth publicity exercise but it went gravely wrong, cos the vote went to the opposition..My God were the editors at CNA asleep when they aired this on the news on National TV???

LOL! If only it happens also in real life!

What kind of name is dylan? Can't people differentiate between first and last names before adopting it?

Re: Where but only in YoungPAP debate is the opposition script written by the propose

At first glance I thought it was a sign of our nation maturing politically.

Then I realized the absurdity of it all. The opposition's stance was "Singaporean-first policies cannot be crafted because Singaporeans don't know what they want." Come on, this is beyond lame. Heads I win, tails you lose. PAP either for Singaporeans, or Singaporeans too dumb to know what is good for them. What shit debate is this?

Don't you think you're kinda missing the elephant in the room? What's the reporter's name got to do with a lame wayang show?

psst... softening of their image would help neither PAP nor YPAP... if they truly want to be perceived as Pro-Singaporean, drop their million dollar wages first :D:D:D

What shit debate is this?

bro,

motions in debate are usually made up of motherhood statements, cut them some slack. crux of the issue shouldn't be missed nonetheless, the young of our populace are really clueless about what they want in life. compare a 16 yr old from Singapore to their counterparts in Finland, you'll see the stark disparity :p:p:p

Now you are getting it! Lame alright.

They are using the debate theme to tell/sell/con/bluff us something we dont want to hear or accept.

Coming from the Yappies, I'm not surprised both sides argued on the premise that PAP can do no wrong.

Actually if you are referring to a 16 yo on the set (are they that young?), then these kids know what they want - to join the PAP. Of course, chances are slimmer than hitting Toto first prize if their parents are nobody. As observed from PAP GE2011 MP draft. But I think you are not referring to that. How different is an SG brat compared to a Nordic goldielocks?

those on the set are entirely a different breed altogether, don't think they are 16 :eek::eek:

our SG 16 yr olds are one hopeless, clueless bunch. they are lazy to think for themselves yet believing that the entire universe revolves around them. as you aptly classified them, brats.

had the opportunity to interact with some folks from Switzerland, never mind that i classify them as brats of a different class, they exuded a sense of purpose of what they want to or aim to achieve :D:D:D

I think the reporter tried his best to quote something coherent. With lines like these, I thought it might be possible that debaters are fairly young. Possibly 16, because at JC level (17-18 yo) trained debating teams are more sophisticated.

Or perhaps they're just untrained debaters.

Ahh.. I think I see what you mean. These kids have no idea what they want, so they perceive others to hold their view too. I think it stems from an inability to comprehend plurality in society, that policies will affect different segments of the population differently. Some will benefit, others may be much worse off. It is a hasty generalization to conclude that, society must certainly benefit on an aggregate level to policy changes. It may not, because governments may not have your best interests in mind. Unequal bargaining power could force the weaker side to accept less of their share, which I suspect explains our situation today.

Excessive import of FTs as bro kingrant mentioned is one such policy that worsens citizens'/workers' standard of living, while the exorbitant pricing of public housing to accumulate reserves is another.

My guess is that these kids haven't worked a day in their lives to comprehend such issues. Or plain dishonest like the some of the PAPies.

Re: Where but only in YoungPAP debate is the opposition script written by the propose

Not sure if you guys realise this. These exercises and debates are common in the youth wing of political parties. It is to give the impression that one exists in a democracies and both sides are considered. That is why PAP youth members confidently feel that all angles are covered and give the holier than thou attitude in public engagement.

There is however a no holds barred discussion with frank views held with prospective leaders and captains of industry etc. These are not publicised and neither are they publicly discussed by participants. The participants are not coy but are afraid that they will lose access or not get invited again. After all networks must be protected.

Re: Where but only in YoungPAP debate is the opposition script written by the propose

Absolutely agree. Did these people grow up on Stupid or something?

I've had the pleasure of discussing issues with these YPAP types before - their raison d'etre can be summed up as:
1. The government always has our best interests at heart, and is invariably right.
2. When in doubt, refer to 1.

I don't really care what people are for or against, if they are able to explain clearly and concisely what they stand for. As it is, most YPAPs - do we call them CBKs and PLPs? - can't even tell you why they support certain policies, without eventually going into "Gahmen knows best" mode.

Btw, I knew quite clearly what I wanted at 16, so I must be a brat of a different kind. :D

At first glance I thought it was a sign of our nation maturing politically.

Are you guys that young? There used to be televised debates where one side was "Proposition" and the other side "Opposition". Opposition has got nothing to do with Opposition MPs.

lianbeng replies to shirwin eu, "but what's the point of having brain yet cannot develop our own phone or invent Singapore car or cannot produce anything due to no natural resources? during kampong days, we grew our own vegetables and fruit trees, reared our own chickens and ducks, pigs and goats and cows, etc... who says we do not have natural resources?"
