[h=1]Singapore's 'special one'[/h]
Published on Aug 16, 2013

THE extracts from former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew's new book, One Man's View Of The World, make for interesting reading ("Lee Kuan Yew on..."; Sunday).

Mr Lee is the only leader in the world that I know of who stepped down of his own accord when he was at the peak of his power.

He had already groomed a second-line leadership, and he stepped down as prime minister to let
Mr Goh Chok Tong and his team take over the governance of the nation. Yet he stayed on in the Cabinet so that should any major crisis hit Singapore, he would be around to intervene, if required, to put things right.

Critics often point out that Singapore's phenomenal development cannot be attributed to Mr Lee alone, and much of the credit should go to his old guard colleagues such as Mr Goh Keng Swee, Mr Lim Kim San, Mr Howe Yoon Chong and others.

Mr Lee is no economist. His comrades and consultants like Dutch economist Albert Winsemius probably provided the framework and input for Singapore's early industrialisation and subsequent economic development.

Though his colleagues may have been the "brains", the "executioner" of the plans was clearly Mr Lee.

Under the Land Acquisition Act, he acquired acres of pig, poultry and vegetable farms, fish ponds and fruit tree plantations for a pittance - all for national development. He did the same with private lands and houses in critical areas. He took a big political risk in undertaking these measures and he succeeded.

His guts and gumption were manifested in the political sphere as well when he took on and defeated his formidable left-wing rivals and their political outfit, the Barisan Sosialis.

Only Mr Lee could have shut down Nanyang University and subsequently converted it to a second university. If English is now the first language for most Singaporeans, the credit should go to Mr Lee, who pushed for it more than anyone else.

In all honesty and with due respect, I don't think Singapore would have achieved all it did if the People's Action Party had been led by someone else.

For people of my generation, Mr Lee is indeed the "special one", and I am a retiree with no attachment to any political party.

I don't think LKY voluntarily gave up the post ...the quid pro quo was that Wooden Goh quit for LHL to assume post and that LKY gets to remain in cabinet. Wooden Goh also got assurance that he will get a seat in the cabinet for as long as he wished.

Idiot Kalidas, the real special one is me, not that bastard LKY.

THE old adage that the truth hurts is a very apt description of how Malaysian political leaders have responded to former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew's new book, One Man's View Of The World.

Soon after the book was launched, a number
of politicians from across the Causeway lost no time in rebutting Mr Lee's views on their country's social and political situation.

While some refuted his statements by giving their own comments, others could not elaborate on their reasons for dismissing his views as "outdated" and "obsolete" ("Malaysian politicians react to Mr Lee's book", last Friday; and "Lee Kuan Yew's views obsolete, says Anwar", Sunday).

A few of Malaysia's former ministers were more rational, with one of them being thankful to Mr Lee for defeating the communists and communalists who could have disrupted the peace in their country, while another admired Singapore's success story.

Nobody is perfect and our founding father is no exception. But his foresight and wisdom are envied by many countries, and many world leaders have sought his advice on international affairs.

There are people who disagree with Mr Lee's thoughts and leadership style, yet they would not want to miss reading his books or memoirs.

In short, they know that he is a respected and great leader whose wise words should be heeded and are beneficial to all of us.

This is what I have been saying on a daily basis in this forum. It is rewarding and satisfying to see that I am starting to convert others to realise what a great leader Mr LKY is.

I refer to the 16 Aug 2013 Straits Times letter “Mr
Lee is indeed Singapore’s ‘special one’
” by Mr K. Kalidas.

Western leaders generally do not contest for power beyond two, three terms
even though they can if they wanted to. Choosing to step down after three
decades in power means Mr Lee far overstayed his time in office by Western
standards. Only autocrats and despots tend to stay in power for that long.

Furthermore, his so-called stepping down wasn’t complete as he retained such
roles and positions as Senior Minister and Minister Mentor which allowed him to
continue influencing cabinet decisions like the use of dialects in the media
which he recently revealed.

Dr Winsemius wasn’t just one of the brains behind Singapore’s
industrialisation and economic development, he was the chief architect and
planner.
The scale of the plans was such that no one person could possibly have
executed them all by himself or herself. That would be most unfair to Dr Goh
Keng Swee and others who more than Mr Lee deserve that recognition. There can be
no doubt that in the economic arena, it was Dr Winsemius and Dr Goh who
mattered, not Mr Lee.

Mr Lee has always been a shrewd politician and the political risk of the Land
Acquisition Act was clearly not very high because the number of people who would
benefit from it would outweigh the number who would suffer from it. The act was
in essence the expropriation of land from land owners much like the
collectivisation of farms by the communists. It was nothing to be proud of and
we should consider the suffering and loss of pig farmers who lost their
livelihood overnight. While it did contribute to nation building, the land
acquired on the cheap then is today leased out for 99 years at such a high price
that a discount is considered a subsidy by the government. Where is the justice
to those people whose gift of land to the nation has become a subsidy by the
government today?

It wasn’t Mr Lee who defeated the Barisan Socialis but the British instead.
Whether it was Lim Yew Hock or Mr Lee, both depended on British might to destroy
the Leftists.

Mr Lee could shut down Nanyang University because he had gained absolute
control of the population and the economy by then. It wasn’t something
creditable but regrettable because Mr Lee forever wiped out Chinese medium
schools in Singapore.
While Malaysia still has Chinese medium schools today,
Singapore no longer has Chinese medium schools, something Malaysian PM Najib
quite rightly pointed out recently. Singapore’s second university, NTU is not
Nantah. Nantah forever vanished after Mr Lee closed it down.

If someone else had been in charge, we might still have Barisan and Nantah
and the nation would have been richer for it
. But regardless of whether or not
he was in charge, it was clear that the Singapore economic engine would have
roared just the same with the brain of Dr Winsemius and the execution of Dr Goh
Keng Swee plus countless other people. Even our bilingual system today was first
introduced by Mr Lee Kong Chian, not Lee Kuan Yew.

Mr Kalidas is just one out of more than 3 million Singaporeans. If only 60%
are like Mr Kalidas in regarding Mr Lee as the special one, wouldn’t that make
Mr Lee a less than half-past-six special one?

Thank you.

MSM help to paint lky as some Demi god machiam the North Korean great/dear leaders.
It's time more people get to know the truth.
Hardly anything great about this shit smear on sole....
He was good at taking credit that's for sure....even if any good contributions he did in the early years with the help and support of his colleagues.....already sullied by his vile ways to stay in power and plunder money in the later years.

Mr Lee is the only leader in the world that I know of who stepped down of his own accord when he was at the peak of his power.
Step down? He promoted himself to Senior Millionster and then Millionster Mentor.

He had already groomed a second-line leadership

not only second line but 5 lines.

This is not acquisition, it is daylight robbery. Peasants are forced off their lands with token compensation and the lands are resold raising billions. The wealth and inheritance of future generations are robbed and distributed among the few elites

That retiree who wrote this is either retarded or senile.

What the hell has happened to Singapore? How can Singaporeans tolerate and accept such gross, crude and uncivilised behaviour by these Chinese visitors/immigrants?

What has happened to the strict and efficient enforcement officers from the city authorities who has a reputaion of arresting and charging people for throwing even a piece of paper or a cigarette butt onto the roadside, keeping of unsightly long hair by men or even chewing gum on the LRT? Why aren't they doing their jobs here?

If arrested, I think the courts in Singapore should punished these barbarians with double community labour plus a hefty fine to teach them to behave according to standard norms of behaviour!
