KOTA SAMARAHAN - Police yesterday found the body of a 15-year-old boy buried behind the home of a teenager who was believed to have murdered him.
The victim, Taufik Abdul Rahim, was last seen riding his motorcycle to town from his home in Kampung Iboi Ulu at 1pm on Saturday.
When he failed to return home, his father Abdul Rahim Hassan went to the police but was told to return the following day as missing persons reports can only be filed after 24 hours.
Rahim lodged the report at 1pm on Sunday.
At 8am yesterday, villagers spotted a 19-year-old riding Taufik's motorcycle and informed police.
When policemen questioned the teenager, he led them to his home in Kampung Sadong Jaya Laut and showed them where he had buried Taufik, in a shed behind the house.
Investigations revealed the victim was bludgeoned to death.
It is learned that Taufik, who was a Form Three student at SMK Semera, was acquainted with the suspect, who police believe is a member of a gang specialising in motorcylce theft.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Abdul Rahman Ahmad said police were looking for five other suspects.
Sources said the teenager's house had been a hive of activity at night since the death of his mother a few months ago.
Since then, the suspect has been staying alone at his parents' home at the village.

[A Myanmar national carrying his five-month-old daughter into an ambulance for a check-up at Malacca Hospital after her mother and maid were found stabbed to death at their home in Taman Malim Permai, Malim Jaya.]
MALACCA: The husband of a Myanmar woman was shocked when he discovered the bodies of his wife and maid at their house in Taman Malim Permai here.

The bodies of Nyat Nyat, 35, who runs a restaurant in Melaka Sentral Terminal, and her maid Taw Taw Neo, 31, were found with multiple stab wounds yesterday.
It is learnt that Nyat's husband, identified only as Sithu, 35, arrived home at 12.45pm but found the door locked. He then called his brother-in-law who arrived promptly.
Nyat's younger brother Nanda, 30, said both of them managed to pry open the kitchen window and were horrified to see the maid lying in the kitchen and his sister's body in the living room.
Nyat and her husband have been renting the house for the past six years. Besides running the restaurant, they also worked as agents bringing Myanmar migrant workers into the country.
The police found Nyat's five-month-old daughter alive in one of the rooms of the two-storey house.
The bodies have been sent to the Malacca Hospital for post-mortem.
A neighbour, who only wanted to be known as Wan, said he heard a commotion from Nyat's house.
"The argument stopped shortly afterwards and I saw two men calmly walking out the house and leaving on foot about an hour later," he added. State CID chief DCP Raja Shaharom Raja Abdullah said police were investigating the motive for the killings as the house was not ransacked and none of the valuables was missing. -The Star/Asia News Network

GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with an alleged sexual misconduct case at a children's home here.

It is learnt that the boy, who was detained in Sungai Petani at about 1am yesterday, had been remanded until Tuesday.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the boy was arrested after a 41-year-old woman lodged a report at the Patani Road police station on Wednesday, alleging that some children at the home had been sexually abused.
The woman, who wanted to be known only as Lim, claimed that a group of 10 children sought her help on Dec 13 last year.
She said one of the victims, who was also 15 years old, had told her that he was sodomised and forced to perform oral sex on others.
Lim went to the home on Dec 29 with the victim's aunt and four Social Welfare Department officers to bring the boy out. He had since returned to his family.
On Friday, the home opened its door to the press. Its board chairman said the home had cooperated with the authorities but was still in the dark over the allegations as they could not get hold of a copy of the police report.
He added that police had obtained various documents on a 15-year-old boy from the home.
He said although the boy's aunt had told them on Dec 29 that he was sodomised by another child of the same age at the home four years ago, they had no knowledge of it. Police are expected to forward the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor next week. -The Star/Asia News Network

Malaysia orders probe into Sikh trainee's haircut

Malaysia orders probe into Sikh trainee's haircut
The alleged incident has shaken faith in a controversial national service programme. -AFP

Wed, Jan 19, 2011
AFP
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysian authorities are investigating the case of a Sikh military trainee who said his long hair had been lopped off as he slept, triggering outrage among the minority community.
The alleged incident has again shaken faith in a controversial national service programme, launched in 2004, to foster national unity by recruiting all Malaysians, including those from ethnic minorities.
Basant Singh, 17, said his hair, which had reached below his waist, was cut as he slept at a training camp in northern Penang state.
"I was fast asleep on Sunday night. When I woke up the next day, I realised that my hair had been cut off as I was about to tie it," Singh was quoted as telling The Star newspaper.
The incident has caused deep concern among Malaysia's 150,000-strong Sikh community - a minority in the Muslim-majority country - for whom cutting hair is forbidden.
In a sign of the sensitivities in a country where minorities say their rights are being eroded by rising "Islamisation", authorities immediately launched a two-week probe into the case.
"We will investigate. We will do a thorough probe. I don't want to speculate (as to what happened)," Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil, director-general of the national service training department, told AFP Wednesday.
Basant's father, 46-year-old Sikh religious leader Surinderpal Singh, said his son had become withdrawn since the incident, in which his hair was cut by 50cm (20 inches).
"He is quite traumatised as I have taught him never to cut his hair," he told AFP, adding that he would not allow his son to continue in the national service programme as he feared for his safety.
"My friends are deeply hurt. It is a tragedy that has happened not just to an individual, but to our Sikh community," he said.
Harcaran Singh, president of the Malaysian Gurdwaras Council, a Sikh representative body, said the probe must seek to determine who was involved in the hair-cutting and what their motives were.
"It is not a trivial issue. It must be nipped in the bud. This kind of incident will erode confidence in the national service programme," he said.
The military-style national service programme for 18-year-olds, compulsory for three months for those selected by lottery, was launched in 2004 to boost patriotism and racial integration.
However, the scheme has been beset by problems including unsafe campsites and the death of 16 trainees, triggering calls for its closure.

A MAN angry with his wife for not returning with him after attending her younger sibling's engagement assaulted his father-in-law and brother-in-law in a fit of rage, frontpaged by the Harian Metro.

The man, who is in his 30s, allegedly went amok and smashed the windscreen of two cars before assaulting his 51-year-old father-in-law.
The daily quoted a police source as saying that the incident took place at the father-in-law's home on Sunday.
After the man left he called his brother-in-law, who is in his 20s, at around 10pm suggesting that they meet and giving the impression that he wanted to clear the air.
His brother-in-law accompanied by his two friends and father-in-law met the suspect at a restaurant near their housing area.
However, they were later allegedly assaulted by the suspect and a group of 10 unknown men, who were believed to be his friends armed with sticks and iron rods. The victims sustained injuries to their hands and bodies and were taken to the hospital after reporting the attack to the Jinjang police.

KOTA BARU - A father of seven was jailed for 15 years by the Sessions Court here after he was found guilty of raping a mentally-challenged woman who then gave birth to a baby boy.

Sessions judge Rofiah Mohamad passed the sentence, to run from yesterday, after Mokhtar Hassan, 53, a security guard, was found guilty of raping the then 18-year-old woman in a house at Kampung Berdang, Jeli, in April 2006.
She said Mokhtar was lucky to escape being whipped for the offence because the crime was committed before the laws under the Criminal Procedure Code for sexual offences were amended in 2007 to include whipping for those above 50.
Before the change, under the Section 376 of the Penal Code, anyone above the age of 50 found guilty of rape was exempted from caning but could be jailed a minimum of five years up to a maximum of 20.
"The crime you committed is very serious, to the extent that the victim gave birth to a baby and now she is unable to take care of her child because of her condition.
"You are very lucky that you committed the offence before the amendment was made. Otherwise, I would surely include the caning sentence," Rofiah said in her judgment.
Mokhtar's counsel Faizal Abd Rahman applied for a stay of execution pending appeal at the High Court. According to the case facts, the victim's family lodged a police report after finding out that their daughter was pregnant. Mokhtar was later arrested and the baby, who was born on Feb 12, 2007, was confirmed to be his child after a DNA test.

Citing a Harian Metro (a Malaysian newspaper) report, major Malaysian daily The Star said the easy money - five-digit incomes - was appealing to these individuals.
Harian Metro reportedly interviewed a few of them, who produced proof of their higher education qualifications to the paper.
Lala, a 24-year-old tourism diploma holder from the northern state of Kedah, said her work was easy and could reap large financial gain in a short span of time.
Liyana, 25, explained how she duped men into banking money into her account. She would offer massage services on her Facebook and Tagged profiles. Interested men would bank in RM100 to RM150 (S$42 - 64) into her account even before seeing her in person. After getting the money, she would disappear or make excuses for cancelling or not turning up.

The Star/Asia News Network
SEREMBAN: A woman believed to have been raped, assaulted and possibly dragged on the road before being dumped by a roadside on Friday morning has been identified by police as a Chinese national here on a student pass.
The woman, aged 37, was found unconscious by motorists near a traffic intersection in Lukut, Port Dickson,
She suffered serious head injuries and is now fighting for her life in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital here.
She also sustained injuries on the elbows and knees, which may have been a result of her being dragged on the road.
Police have refused to divulge the victim's name for her own safety and it is not known how long she has been in the country.
When contacted, state CID chief Asst Comm Hamdan Majid said investigations were on-going and the victim's safety was a priority.
"She is in stable condition but unable to communicate. We are hoping that she will recover soon as she is the only one who can tell us what really happened.
"We are doing all we can to get to the bottom of the matter but we do not want to reveal details at the moment as the suspects are still at large," he said adding that the Chinese Embassy would be notified.
ACP Hamdan said the police were examining all possibilities including if the victim was being employed here.

A 35-year-old Malaysian was jailed yesterday for three months and fined $16,000 for smuggling puppies from Malaysia into Singapore.
Liow Kar Hong pleaded guilty to 16 counts of bringing in dogs without a licence.
The Straits Times reported that officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint found 16 pedigree puppies hidden in a specially built speaker compartment in the boot of a Toyota Wish on Jan 28. He had smuggled other puppies on five previous attempts without being caught. They found seven red poodles, four bulldogs, three shih tzus and two pugs.
Prosecuting officer Yap Teck Chuan of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority had asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence, because Liow could have introduced rabies into Singapore, which has not seen any outbreaks of the disease since 1953.
Liow would drive into Singapore with the puppies and meet a Singaporean contact known to him as Ah Lai at a Pasir Ris carpark. Ah Lai would then drive off with the car and return it later without the puppies.
The court also heard that the puppies were in bad condition when they were found, and two poodles died while in quarantine.
Liow could have been fined up to $10,000 and/or jailed for a year on each charge.

PETALING JAYA: Berita Harian has issued a public apology over its publication of a cartoon depicting the devastating tsunami and earthquake that swept Japan and killed thousands.
The Malay daily published the apology on its website, Twitter and Facebook accounts yesterday after several quarters demanded that the newspaper apologise for the publication.
"We apologise for the publication of the cartoon in Berita Minggu. We had no intention of poking fun at the disaster that has befallen the nation of Japan and its people.
"In fact, we greatly sympathise with their plight and share the sorrow of the Japanese people," the daily's editor wrote.
The cartoon, drawn by Mohd Zohri Sukimi or more popularly known as Zoy, showed the popular Japanese icon Ultraman running away from an oncoming tsunami.
The publication created a buzz on social networking sites with politicians and the public criticising the daily's poor judgment, describing the cartoon as "distasteful" and "insensitive".
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin tweeted that the paper must apologise for publishing the cartoon which was "totally insensitive towards the Japanese".
"It is unfortunate that it was published below Berita Harian Sdn Bhd group editor (Datuk Mior Kamarul Shahid's column)," he tweeted.
Bukit Lanjan assemblyman cum Selangor executive councillor Elizabeth Wong tweeted that "the matter was not funny".
Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Azmi encouraged the public to sign an online petition to protest against the "inappropriate cartoon".
Many Facebook users placed the link http://www.petitiononline.com/bharian/petition.html on their pages.

JOHOR BARU, Malaysia - A 49-year-old woman was punched and held captive for almost 48 hours before she was released in a housing estate here early yesterday.
Yuen Mei Kien, an administrator in a construction firm in Singapore, lost her car and some cash at the end of the ordeal.
She said she would normally drive from her home in Taman Skudai Baru to Bukit Indah so that she could carpool to work in the republic daily.
"As usual, I drove to Bukit Indah about 6am on Thursday and parked my car near a fast food outlet. It was raining when I got down from my car and was opening an umbrella when a man came up to me, punched me repeatedly and grabbed me by the neck as I screamed for help."
Yuen said the man, in his 30s, then forced her into the back seat of her car, tied her hands behind her back with wire, taped her eyes shut and her legs together.
Later, she heard another man get into the car and both of them seemed to be going through the things in her handbag while speaking in Tamil to one another.
"I believe I was in the car for about 12 hours. At one juncture, when the pain in my arms became excruciating from lying in one position for too long, I lied to them that I was suffering from kidney problems.
"They then untied my hands but my feet and eyes remained taped."
The men made several stops, which Yuen believed was to withdraw money using her automated teller machine cards.
After the ordeal in the car, Yuen was taken to a house where she was kept blindfolded and tied up.
"I had no idea where I was or what my abductors would do to me while I was being held captive."
Yuen said her abductors released her in Jalan Indah 1/3, not far from where she had been abducted, about 2.30am yesterday.
Yuen, a divorcee, said her face and arms were still in pain.
Nusajaya district police chief Superintendent Aziz Ahmad said the case was being investigated for kidnapping and gang robbery.
He said Yuen lost her car, RM500 (S$208) and S$1,000.

SUNGAI BULOH, MALAYSIA - A 41-year-old businessman was found dead with gunshot wounds to his head and chest in Jalan Kg Subang, near Sg Buloh here.
Lim Chee Choye, who was in his Honda Accord when he was shot, got out of his car and sought help before he collapsed and died in the 7am incident near the Rubber Research Institute.
Lim had apparently just left his house in Kg Subang.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said police received a call from a security guard of the institute who found Lim slumped on the ground.
"A police forensics team found several 9mm bullet casings at the crime scene.
"The incident occurred during heavy traffic and we believe someone must have witnessed it. We hope they will come forward and assist us in our investigations," he said.
ACP Arjunaidi said police did not rule out business rivalry as the motive for the murder.
Lim's body was sent to the Sg Buloh Hospital for a post-mortem.
ACP Arjunaidi said police believed the gunman used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol but did not want to comment on whether it was the work of a hired killer.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

At the kiosk, I also noticed customers smoking on the premises.
Most of them park their motorcycles in front of the kiosk's convenience store, sit on their bikes and light up a cigarette. Many appear to be Singaporeans, judging from their vehicles' licence plates.

Allo, not many Singaporeans drive their bikes to JB lah.
