What's the difference between cod liver oil and fish oil?

When I was in hospital in Singapore, post-IV drip to solid diet, my breakfast was usually porridge and carrot cake, lunch and dinner, rice, some variety of meat and veggie, and soup. I've visited a friend in US hospital before. He was served something that looked like McD value meal, burger, fries and apple pie, only less the coke, replaced with hot choc.

In Spore I had to worry about the cost of the hospital stay & couldn't wait to get out:)

This contrasted to my Canadian experience.
In Canadian hospitals they have a 21 day menu before the meals repeat. You have choices such as roast beef, lasagna,. turkey,... No coke but you can get ginger beer :)

I talked to the dietician & I also got daily milk shakes. :) In my case I needed the calories to build up broken bones & torn flesh.

During tea breaks I had selection of roast beef, chikcken & cheese sandwiches & juices.

I found out that I was allergic to the hospital gowns, so I washed my own hospital gown. They provided me with the milk powder to use to do the laundry. There was a washer & dryer in the hospital for patient to use:eek:

I actually enjoyed my hospital stay except for the needles & pain:o

You mean you have Canadian healthcare coverage? Anyway, I stayed in Singapore Class C only. On IV drip most of the time except the last couple of days. From the menu, I guess it's 7-day rotating, so-called. The staple is the same with some changes in the side dishes. Well, good enough for me.

You washed your own gowns?! That's the first time I heard of a patient doing that. But yes, I kind of enjoyed my stay and I don't mind drip needles and injection needles. Anyway, if you've seen a drip needle which is more like a rod inserted through your arms and stay there for days, injection and blood extraction needles are aunties' sewing needles to you. I actually didn't feel like leaving if not for concern over the bill, even just at Class C.

How old are you, 20's?, 30's?,.....

In the past the vulnerable age was 40's onwards, but with the new generation younger people are being affected.

More people in their 20's & 30's are getting serious problems nowadays like cancer, diabetes, allergies, etc.

I am knowing of a Malaysian aunty who is frequent visitor to RWS.
She is already in her 70s but is very alert and active for her age.
She is telling me her secret recipe to good health is drinking kangen water.

This aunty was bedridden with arthritis and diabetes and cervical cancer when she was in her late 50s. Then her doctor nephew bought a kangen water machine and she is drinking it everyday.
In 3 months her cancer going into remission and she can be getting up and walking slowly.
1 year later she is no more having any pains from her arthritis.
Her diabetes and cancer also no more symptoms.
At first I am not knowing what is kangen water.
Then my manager is telling me it is alkaline water.

Maybe you can trying this kangen water for your sickness. :p

They mentioned that fish oil's benefits are usually noticed when you eat a lot of it. I used to do it and ending up shitting out fish oil.

My boyfriend said that sometimes when he goes down on me that I exude an onion/garlic odour. Apparently this usually occurs after eating a curry. I will try fish oil capsules, hopefully this will counteract the problem and restore a similar taste/smell to that he is accustomed to.:)

What are the beneficial effects of chicken essence (and others)? It's supposely invented for British sailors but for many years more popular in the east. It's quite expensive, even untaxed, more expensive than alcohol.

What's the difference between chicken essence and eating chicken?

A nuitritionist will probably tell you that a well balanced diet will probably do you more good. The greatest problems most Singaporeans have with their diet is that Singaporeans don't eat enough vegetables and consume far too much oil/salt, thanks mainly to eating hawker fare.

I'm already using an ionizer which I got many years ago. The dealer is no longer around.

Recently I was looking to replace it. For those who are curios can visit
http://www.kemptrading.com/
They have a showroom at International Plaza, #02-86
The models they carry use components manufactured in Japan & assembled in Korea. Their prices are reasonable when you compare to models from Novita, which has now started carrying ionizers.

While reading Udo Erasmus website I came across the following which may help. He is refering to veggy sources of Omega 3 but should apply to Omega 3 from fish sources .

What is the maximum advisable dose of your oil blend?

I've seen as much as 10 tablespoons per day used in cases of cancer, AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, and weight reduction. I once ingested 15 tablespoons in one day, and on another occasion, I had 17 tablespoons of the oil blend mixed in fruit juice for breakfast. I had no problem digesting it but I also wasn't hungry for the rest of the day.

In the beginning, you may want to start with smaller amounts and gradually increase to optimum levels which is approximately 1 tablespoon per 50 pounds of body weight; especially if you have a history of being on a low fat or a no fat diet, or if your liver is weak.

Should your liver be unable to handle the amount you are taking at any one time, you will feel heavy or become nauseous. If you took even more oil at this point, you would vomit. Why? The liver has to process the oils and fats you eat. If you exceed its processing capacity by taking more oil at any one time than it can handle, it will protect itself from overworking by making you hurl.

If you do become nauseous, you must begin with smaller amounts. How small? If you can't take three tablespoons, take one. If one is too much, use one teaspoon. If that's too much, take a few drops. If that's too much, take a lick. And if that's too much, take a whiff. But don't quit. Your body requires essential fatty acids in order to function and for you to live. Someone once asked me: Can I just think about it? And I said yes, because if you think about it, you will eventually end up taking a whiff.

So start small, and eventually increase the amount you take. Sometimes liver function is poor because of essential fat deficiency. Then you must give this organ time to recover. Build up liver capacity again by starting with small amounts of the precious essential fatty acids. Be gentle with yourself. Do what you can.

Can you get too much essential fat?

When you get more than 12-15% of total calories as n-3s, there is a fat "burn-off" based on increased metabolic rate. Other than exceeding liver capacity and getting nauseous, or not sleeping because of too much energy because you took it too close to bedtime, it doesn't appear so.

I'm in mid 30s, thankfully still alright. My biggest vice should be whiskey. :D

I was staying in Canada at that time & was covered by the provincial health care insurance. All Canadian are covered by the health care system. If you are poor you are still covered as the poor are exempt from the premiums. Senior citizens are also exempt from the premiums

I had to wash my gown with milk powder because I was allergic to the detergent they used to wash the gowns. I started having rashes only when I started doing alot of physio therapy, it caused alot rubbing of skin against the gown.

Cost is not a concern in the Canadian health care system. The rich & poor receive equal treatment. In my case, since I was covered by the health care system I only had to pay an admission charge of less tha CAN$50 :) Xrays, oxygen, operation, physio therapy, meals, etc all covered.

Can't believe it! You two, Johnny and Ramseth, actually enjoy staying in hospitals. I've never been hospitalised before and hopefully never will be.

Anyway Johnny, you're a Canadian PR?

Pollutants & trans fats take time to build up in the body. They'll accumulate in the body & will eventually interfere with the various bodily functions.

If you don't do the necessary lifestyle changes e.g. avoid trans fat you'll get the bad news in your 40's or 50's: high cholesterol, type II diabetes, cancers,...:(

I'm not here to preach, only to share info.

Yes, thanks. I do appreciate forummers like you. Crossing mid-30s, I'm thankful that I'm still alright slim and fit, but concerns about health keep coming as I watch my peers bloat or wilt. I'm a meat eater and drinker. I can't do without meat and whiskey. The only health supplement I take is cod liver oil. I've been taking a few capsules daily since I was a kid. It's family tradition. Recently I was introduced to fish oil. That's why I started this thread.

No I made the choice to return to Spore.
Back then the most common question I was asked was "Why"

I'm now ready to leave Spore but I'm plagued with health problems & you've probably heard that it's better to be dead then sick in Spore  Knew someone who ran up a $200,000 medical bill before he died of cancer.

PAP has become too greedy & selfish

Spore is pretty bad because you get alot of stress & pollution. You should consider adding a good multi-vitamin to your diet.

Every few months you should consider doing a detox. I've tried the Natures Secret product which is carried by GNC:

However I've invested in a personal FIR Sauna unit(under $500) because I'm concerned with the numerous chemical & heavy metal pollutants in the environment. Spending 10 to 15 minutes is enough to cause alot of sweating, few realise that sweating is a good thing as it rids the body of toxins.

for cod liver oil, is it

1) an oil made from the liver of cod fish; or
2) oil mixed up with small pieces of cod liver?

Most people assume that it is 1).

However given the price of cod fish, an oil made from nothing from the liver of cod fish would be more expensive than bird's nest.

How then are they able to sell it for that cheap price?

If it is 2), they you really have to wonder if it is all that healthy to take it regularly.
