UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, described by a senior staffer as "as ambitious as Lucifer," had been brought into the Trump circle by the president's daughter, Ivanka, whom she "courted and befriended".
Haley, according to Wolff, had concluded that Trump would be a one-term president – if that – and "that she, with requisite submission, could be his heir apparent". The Trumps, however, had different ideas.
"Haley, as had become increasingly evident to the wider foreign policy and national security team, was the family's pick for secretary of state after Rex Tillerson's inevitable resignation. (Likewise, in this shuffle, Dina Powell would replace Haley at the UN.)"
Bannon was so worried that Haley might outsmart Trump, wrote Wolff, that he pushed for the Trump-appointed CIA director, Mike Pompeo, to replace Secretary of State Tillerson if – or more likely when – he eventually resigned.

In 2009, some tried to box us into a confrontational Iran policy under the guise of supporting Iranian protestors' quest for civil rights. Yes, we openly discussed this fact inside the US government.

In 2009, we had no doubt that Obama’s White House wouldn't buy the snake oil some people were selling. In 2018, many feel that Trump’s White House is a combination of: 1) Dumb enough to fall for it, and 2) Dying to accept it because they have their own axe to grind vis-à-vis Iran

I remember one Iranian American analyst giving his take: “The fall of the regime is a marathon, not a sprint,” he said. “Not a matter of if, but when.” This contradicted every single one of our internal US government assessments at the time.

One of my govt colleagues replied: “You’re not substantiating your prediction with evidence. And even if you did, the regime would have to fall NOW in order for your prediction to be accurate. Saying the regime will fall without specifying WHEN isn’t much of a prediction, is it?”

From that point forward, his invitations to the State Department declined. It may not matter if you’re wrong on Iran in the court of public opinion (there is zero accountability), but it does matter to career government officials. When you BS them, they don’t forget.

Today, some of my former US govt colleagues tell me it’s déjà vu all over again: Dealing with people who are using legitimate grievances of Iranians protesting for their civil rights in order to push for hostile policies that a majority of 80 million Iranians aren't asking for.
