What? Firefox 10 is out!

[h=1]What’s New in Firefox 10[/h] By Craig Buckler | February 1, 2012 | HTML & CSS | HTML5 | JavaScript | Open Source | Technology

Firefox reached double-digit version numbers on January 31, 2012. It’s been a mere six weeks since we received Firefox 9.0 but there are several interesting features in the new version…
[h=2]Page Inspector[/h]Firefox now has it’s own built-in page inspector. To launch it, select Inspect from the Web Developer menu, point to an element and choose “Inspect” from the right-click context menu, or press Ctrl+Shift+I. The active element will be highlighted and a bar appears at the bottom of the window showing a clickable breadcrumb trail of the DOM hierarchy.
The HTML button shows the element’s location in the page source while Style displays an editable list of applied CSS rules and properties.

Let’s be honest: it’s not Firebug. But it looks good, works well and will be invaluable on those rare occasions when Firebug isn’t available. I was a little concerned the Inspector would clash with Firebug in some way but I’m yet to encounter a problem.

[h=2]CSS 3D Transforms[/h]Like the webkit browsers, Firefox 10 now supports CSS 3D transforms which allow you to rotate, skew and translate objects in three-dimensional space. You’ll require the -moz prefix but I suspect more developers will experiment with the effects now they’re supported in Firefox, Chrome, Safari and IE10.
[h=2]Fullscreen API[/h]The fullscreen API is another webkit feature which has been implemented in Firefox 10. You guessed correctly — it allows a page to launch the browser in full-screen mode which makes it ideal for videos, games and other interactive media.
Before hackers and pop-up advertisers become too excited, you should note that the browser places several restrictions on the feature and users cannot be placed in fullscreen mode without their knowledge or consent. The API is not particularly stable; the W3C Fullscreen specification is an early draft and there are minor differences between the webkit and gecko implementations.
[h=2]Visibility API[/h]The visibility API allows you to check three new document true/false properties:

  • visible — your document is the foreground tab of a non-minimized window
  • hidden — your document is either a background tab or on a minimized window
  • prerender — your document is being pre-rendered and is not visible to the user
It’s simple but allow us to make more efficient and usable web pages. For example, changing tabs could automatically pause a video or slow down Ajax requests.
[h=2]Dynamic Forward Button[/h]The Forward navigation button now automatically hides itself when there’s no page to forward too! I’ve not heard anyone complain about wasted toolbar space, but it’s a logical interface enhancement since the button’s rarely used.

[h=2]Better Add-On Compatibility[/h]Probably. Until version 10, Firefox assumed add-ons were incompatible if they were marked as valid for an earlier version. This was rarely the case and you could often force an add-on to install by changing the supported browser number. Mozilla has now reversed the policy; any extension which is compatible with Firefox 4.0 and doesn’t contain compiled code is presumed to be compatible.
Add-on issues have not been stopped completely, but the situation has improved considerably since last year.
Overall, Firefox 10 is a solid release with a good number of features. Say goodbye to version 9.0 and upgrade today … because version 11 will be with us on March 13, 2012.

Version number madness. It's a marketing decision.

I have more or less switched to Chrome as my main browser.

If I need to download videos, I will open the webpage with Firefox and download those videos with Downloadhelper.

If I need to get some files in the Temporary Internet Files folder, I'll use Internet Explorer.

My bookmarks are in FF, so my chrome only used when I need to get on web with more than 1 browser. Chrome is too huge I think it will eat to much RAM. It MUST be doing a crazy amount of it's own Kay Poh otherwise it won't be so big a program, so I don't open it unless I need one extra instance of browser.

Same same.. FF when need to use addons, Chrome for speed. FF is a memory guzzler. When i am using windoze, IE cannot be excluded and so i will have 4 browsers. IE, FF, Chrome, Safari. Can launch all four at the same time with no problems - FF being the slowest. :D

In the older and more honest Win XP ages, IE could still be uninstalled in Control Panel ->add/remove programs ->windows features

But later when MS got more freaking greedy they forced users to have (Vista) IE, got sued big time by EU. Court had forced IE again to be optional & user can rid it. I think in W7 at Control Panel ->Programs -> Turn Windows feature on/off you can turn off IE9

However I trust that crook MS is still cheating and exploiting paying customers as usual, that they NEVER really remove that shit from their crappy OS. Just make it not appear before the users, and tried to fool them.

In other words turn-off only move it to run at background and not appearing to users.

Playing with numbers, the numbering game, what's the diff between 9.0 & 10.0?, I know, the in-between versions hangs. FF, is my standy browser in additional to IE, a habit that goes back to Netscape ( if you can remember). I am using Safari for Mac much more these days, as I am weaning myself over to Mac OS.

The competition is stiff now for browsers because of the revolution in HTML from 4.x to 5.0, web tools are getting their positions in market. I found the web tools section increased features in firefox 10.0 and better don't give me bugs with HTML5:eek:.

youtube has everything.

what is the advantages of html 5 over the current one?

It is better for multimedia and cloud applications.

Some players will lose current advantages like Adobe flash.

Browsers are beginning to bypass and them substitute them with other options.

MS active-X will be another loser that get put behind and forgotten by all.
