what can old couples do to prevent such things from happening

Everyone gets old .. so any plans to prevent such things from happening?

One childless couple in their 70s had their electricity almost cut off because they owed SP more than $1,000. The wife is a stroke patient and requires expensive care. With the CCC’s help, SP has allowed them to pay by installments. The elderly couple has used up all their CPF to pay for their private property and left with little for their retirement.

i was thinking in the context of being self-reliant like doing investing and set up biz when young, then old age, you have the investments to feed you.

Fact is many does, and many did...but the caring inclusive society means that, they( the Pxp) care for their money, which became wasn't theirs when they reach that age & inclusive, it meant they are included with the rubbish heap...

For a start, vote opposition. 99% of the elderly vote PAP out of fear, misplaced loyalty, nostalgia for the pioneer old guard, and plain ignorance and stupidity. What do you expect from a pay-and-pay party?

The elderly couples SHOULD NOT be living in PRIVATE property.

They should down grade to HDBee pigeon holes or even low income HDB rented ones ( what am I talking...ALL HDB , BTOs pigeon holes are rented!...hahaha) and have some money left, that is in cash available.
