SINGAPORE – The decision by GlobalFoundries (GF) to expand its manufacturing base here proves that Singapore will continue to have a strong, competitive and vibrant semiconductor industry despite the intense global battle for high-end chip investments, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the US-based company’s new US$4 billion ($5.4 billion) microchip fabrication plant in Woodlands, Mr Wong said that Singapore “cannot afford to engage in a subsidy arms race” and outbid the United States, China, Japan and European Union, which have rolled out massive subsidies to attract chipmakers.

SINGAPORE - Mainstream outlets were the most trusted news brands in Singapore, where overall trust in news increased slightly in 2022, according to the Digital News Report 2023 by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, published on Wednesday.
The Straits Times was ranked the second-most trusted news brand in Singapore among those surveyed, in the University of Oxford-based institute’s annual report.
It tied with Mediacorp Channel 5 News, with 73 per cent of respondents indicating that they trust news from the outlet. CNA was ranked first, with a score of 75 per cent

SINGAPORE – Singapore can be a trusted node for science, technology and innovation amid global challenges, and its nimble regulatory environment allows innovators to develop prototypes quickly, said Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat on Monday.
“Singapore is a little city and this allows us to prototype solutions faster than many other places. We have one single layer of government – if you need regulatory approval, it can be done quickly,” he said during a fireside chat on South-east Asia’s start-up ecosystem at the 11th Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition.
He added that Singapore can be a place where the best talent around the world gather to do research and foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

Mr Lee noted that the joint communique was comprehensive, covering “a lot of ground” for cooperation. The subjects raised ranged from artificial intelligence and reforms at global bodies such as the United Nations, to issues concerning the developing countries.
“Many issues are comprehensively covered. We also put in principles how to address them, but the specifics (and) the actual substance of the cooperation, I think that progress takes a lot of time in this environment,” he told reporters.
“It's partly because I don’t trust you, you don't trust me so therefore, we can't quite strike a deal. But it's also because I don't want you to have a successful result and so I would rather there not be an outcome … There is some of this dynamic in play,” Mr Lee added.
“In that context, I think we did well to have a communique and to have a meeting where substantial issues were discussed and the views were aired.”
