Was anti-death penalty activist harassed?

Adding on, you cannot solely deduce from what she has written. There may be other vivid details that we may be unaware of. You have to be in that real situation to really feel and sense what is going on.

Excuse me. Since when did she get the fancy title "anti-death penalty activist"?

Isnt her official title FBI?

And she was Fucked By this Indian...

I did surveillance before. (Yes, the term is surveillance, not monitor.) Thanklessly tedious and boring job, not as exciting and glamorous as you'd seen in movies.

Hmmmm looks like we got something in common...don't tell me are you from H dept?

I don't need to survey or monitor anyone nowadays.

If i want you in, I'll have my dogs take you in at 4 a.m in the morning when you are asleep!

YD: Cease harassment of Rachel Zeng

Young Democrats

yd_logo.jpg

With reference to the reports where the anti-death penalty campaigner, Ms Rachel Zeng, suspects that she is being harassed and is under surveillance for her activist work, the Young Democrats stands behind her in solidarity and offer her our fullest support for her contributions towards civil society in Singapore.

As fellow socially-aware youths working towards socio-political change in Singapore, we condemn the alleged harassment towards Ms Zeng and demand that the perpetrators responsible cease and desist immediately.

It is an action that is uncalled for in this civilized society. Any organization, agency, or entity that wishes to express displeasure at the activist work that she is doing and the values she espouses ought to do so in the open. The public should be the one to decide on whether she is doing the right thing or not.

Resorting to such underhanded means to intimidate activists only serves to lend further credence to her work and gives further impetus for other activists like her to persevere.

Activists play an important role in our society by bringing to awareness important issues in the greater society that otherwise would have been overlooked by citizens during their day to day struggles.

It is because of this that we stand behind all activists who are putting in their own valuable private time to work for the betterment of Singapore’s society.

It is a thankless duty that they have taken upon themselves and they should be allowed to conduct their activities free from harassment and molestation as long as neither violence nor hatred is espoused and propagated.

To this end, it is our hope that the harassment of Ms Zeng stop and the Young Democrats will continue to speak up and stand in solidarity with all social and political activists in Singapore.

On a related note, the Young Democrats also expresses our concern at the curtailment of freedom of expression with the arrest of the British author, Mr Alan Shadrake, in connection with his latest book, Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock.

A British national, the author has compiled and researched about the various highly controversial cases involving the death penalty in Singapore.

Mr Shadrake has since been released after being detained for over 39 hours since the day of his arrest on 18 Jul 10. He is still being summoned back on a daily basis for investigation related to the charges of criminal defamation and contempt of court brought on by the Singapore Government.

Bryan Ti is a PAP IB asshole...

BryanT - YD harassing our common sense. What Jarrod is doing here is just a play-act. Rachel, SDP and YD can't even prove that there was harassment or that she was even the intended target of any such actions.

In writing this letter, Jarrod is not talking to the "harasser", because even if there were any, he knows that this letter would not serve an iota of purpose in stopping him/them from any further action (if there were any in the first place).

I call this a play-act precisely because Jarrod is merely playing to gallery to portrait that its members/associates are being victimised. He just wants to draw attention to the party's inane causes and actions and play up the false sense that there are some people/organisations out there who feels threatened enough to want to harass Rachel.

I doubt there Rachel is being harassed; the only harassment are to our senses.

Jarrod should quietly advise Rachel to calm down and withhold herself against such sinister imagination (out of her own sense of guilt).

It's true after all! See,what did I tell you fellas! I am quite sure that what she experienced, I also experienced before. Now, who says I am konk in my head.:D

Rachel Zeng: We chose not to be intimidated

Rachel Zeng

It was recently reported on this website that Ms Rachel Zeng was being harassed by a couple of male persons. She suspected that it was because of the book launch she was organising for Once A Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock written by Mr Alan Shadrake who has since been arrested and charged.

Ms Zeng said that the incidents occurred just the day before the book launch. A reader of this website, jbharding, posted a comment asking why Ms Zeng did not warn Mr Shadrake and even suggested that the activist could be an Internal Security Department (ISD) agent who had lured the author into Singapore.

Ms Zeng posted a reply saying that both she and Mr Shadrake were mindful of the risks, but decided to go ahead with it because they did not want to bow down to intimidation.

"Alan Shadrake came because he wanted to," she wrote, then added, "we chose not to be intimidated."

We highlight this exchange because it is important for people to know that there are Singaporeans like Rachel Zeng who will stand up for injustice when they see it and refuse to be cowed into inaction. The Singapore Democrats salute her gumption and courage. We need more people like her to stand up for what is right.

We post jbharding's comment and Ms Zeng's reply below:

‘Who is the real Rachel Zeng???

If Rachel Zeng knew that ISD agents were interested in Shadrake's visiting Singapore, WHY DID SHE NOT WARN SHADRAKE???

This is very strange behavior on her part. Is Rachel Zeng an ISD agent, herself, and was she luring Shadrake into Singapore where the ISD could get their hands on him? Think about it.

jbharding’

Shadrake came because he wanted to

If I am an ISD agent, why are my pockets and bank account always so empty?

Funny how people can assume that I did not ask him to think twice. Alan Shadrake came because he wanted to. Do you actually know about the conversations that took place among the parties involved in the book launch?

APPARENTLY NOT.

Funny too how people think that when being intimidated, one should withdraw. Alan Shadrake did not withdraw from going ahead with the book launch, neither did we who were behind the organising team.

Really, this is a matter of choice. And we chose not to be intimidated.

By the way, ISD wasn't interested in him. Ministry of Law and MDA were. He was told immediately when the books were taken off the shelves as well as other developments thereafter.

But since MDA did not publicly state the status of the book, it is clear that it has not been banned. So that was probably part of why he decided to come anyway.

In fact MDA was reported to have said that the book is not banned, according to a Straits Times report on 17 July 2010. It is very simple to accuse one of something without thinking but just based on what is presented on the surface.

Well jbharding, my turn to implore you to THINK.

Rachel Zeng’

Why she even bother explaining to JBHarding is a mystery. Might as well ask your neighbour permission before going marketing. Singapore Dream Team would be JBHarding, Gopalan Nair, Uncle Yap, Harbans Singh and MG Guru. Everyone is freedom fighter, an activist, a liberal and a socialist. And they all have their own agenda - from selling books, getting clients, looking for NGO grants and god knows what.

Criticising and condeming the tyrannical old man and the oppressive PAP regime is not exactly an act of valour, courage or bravery if there is no impact, no dent and no acceptance from Singaporeans.

I was more amused by the term "the two activists" in the artcle. I am also intrigued by the 2 characters with the laptops. Obviously nothing to do with the govt. If it was getting the handphone number or detaining them, the govt spent thed last 5 decades honing their skills in this area and so would not be an issue. Anyway ISD has never classififed SDP or its associates as a security threat. The Govt treats them more a nuisance.

Really a mystery. I am also wondering why the need for a laptop. Reminds me of the time, the guy who kept tabs on Bob Sim postings on him and made his way to Bob' home. I wonder if Rachel posted something about these guys.

The other weird thing is the gesticulating.

ps. Ramseth might have MSM something to these guys about Rachel.

Wah, may be trying to create some drama or publicity.

SID operations are not so amateurish in their operations, me think. Even PI operations can't be that schoolish! It appears that anybody who comes near Ms Zeng with a headpiece or talking on a handphone or who has an open laptop
is a suspect SID personnel.

Your statement reflects the possibility of fear gripping her causing her to think that she is under surveillance. I ever watched a george Clooney's movie, can't remember the title, in it he just killed a man and ran out of his house, when he see pple talking on cell phones and passing him by,he thought they were cops. This is a case of fear gripping him causing him to think that the passersby are after him.

However, dun forget this rachel is a female meaning she has sharper intuition than most of us here. I believe her story from my own past experience.

SID can't be bother with people like her, internal matters best left to those clowns at ISD. SID more interested in external affairs.
