Instead of addressing the questions raised by the critics of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) upfront directly and honestly, the two PAP leaders responsible for Singapore’s biggest “wayang” continued to throw “smoke-bombs” to obfuscate the crux of the issue and resorted to using the usual PAP rhetoric of “constructive versus destructive criticisms” to demolish and demonize them.
The Singapore 2010 YOG is doomed to failure right from the very beginning, plagued by lack of genuine interest from Singaporeans and plagued by controversies such as mistreatment of YOG volunteers, a still to be resolved mass food poisoning scandal, ticketing glitches and the arrest of a young YOG critic for an innocuous Facebook comment by the Singapore police.
In a press conference two days ago, PAP Sports Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and his sidekick Teo Ser Luck tried rather unconvincingly to put up a defence for their abysmal performance. Not only did they refuse to apologize to Singaporeans for the YOG debacle, they lash out at the critics for not “appreciating” their hard work.
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said nonchalantly that he ignored critics who did not give him any “constructive criticisms”:
“There are many people who are critical but constructive who send me suggestions on how to improve the games. They make a difference and improve our performance. Of course there are other people who just want to criticize. I didn’t bother. Then there is the newspaper report (about the arrest of YOG critic Mr Abdul Malik), I didn’t know about it till I read in the papers, it showed I almost didn’t care. I have good feedback and suggestions from so many people,” he was heard as saying on RazorTV.
[Source: RazorTV]
Mr Malik’s arrest was reported by international media agency Agence France-Presse which minced no words in its verdict on the YOG:
“The August 14-26 event, held for competitors aged from 14 to 18, has generated limited public interest, with many events blighted by empty seats and the host country’s athletes faring badly. Vivian Balakrishnan, the minister for community development, youth and sports, has come under particular fire from online critics over the games.”
[Source: AFP, 25 August 2010]
The report was reproduced worldwide, reinforcing Singapore’s poor international image as a repressive police state.
Mr Teo Ser Luck, the PAP Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sports, was almost in tears as he tried to win the sympathy of his detractors.
“We all work so hard, especially 20,000 volunteers, athletes, coaches and officials, everybody give out so many sweat and tears. The least the critics can do is to appreciate their efforts. If they don’t support for whatever political reasons, they should not also take away the good things and hard work that have been done,” he said.
After all had been said, it is most unfortunate that Mr Teo still didn’t quite get it. Nobody is against the YOG volunteers, athletes and staff. What we are adamantly critical about is the way the games were managed, especially where the welfare of our volunteers and students are concerned.
If the online community did not blow the whistle on the substandard food given to YOG volunteers, would the organizers have bothered and change the food caterer?
At the end of the day, the YOG is about young Singaporeans and as such their opinions, welfare and contributions must be taken into consideration by the organizers. Treating our YOG volunteers like dirt while rolling out the red carpet for foreigners is definitely not a way to win the “hearts and minds” of the youth.
It remains to be seen Singaporeans will ever know how the $387 million dollars is being spent or splurged on the YOG. With no opposition in Parliament to demand for some basic accountaability from Dr Vivian and Mr Teo, the issue is likely to fade away with time.

Let's also give him the nonchalant attitude and "didn't care" gesture when he approached you during his election campaign. This chum-cheng needs to be taken off immediately from any future parliament to avoid him talking down arrogantly again. I think he is the worse PAP people among the many poorly disciplined PAP members including Wee Su Min.

Now Vivian and Ser Luck hide behind the volunteers and insinuate that the criticisms were directed at the volunteers.

Since when did anyone criticize the volunteers ? In fact, the heaviest criticisms were meant to protect the volunteers from their very masters who fed them with dog food and then unhealthy food.

They're effectively trying to sow discord between the critics and the volunteers.

That is always the kind of strategy adopted by PAP. Remember the flood incident? NEA pushed to PUB, PUB pushed to NPB, and ultimately it was the peasants fault. When the heat gets unbearable the grand master LKY blamed God for everything. Not forgetting the blame about Mas Selamat escape, the MRT graffiti and blameing Singaporeans fro not wanting to board the crowded trains also took newspaper headline. Fortunately, recent surveys proved to the world that Singapore transport efficiency and standard have plunged for 3 consecutive years. I wonder what has the million dollars CEO got to say about this or is she thinking how to blame Singaporeans for the poor transport standard?

The issue in a simple sense is as simple as 3 points:

1. Why when budget bloated 3 times, volunteers' foods quality and quantity shrank, even till food poisoning standards?

2. Why must commoner drivers give way to YOG vehicles? Is that an emergency? YOG drivers and athletes should be told to start off early if traffic jams are expected. Even real Olympics do that.

3. Adults being coerced into volunteer help may have their personal agenda in expectation of reward in kind, but why are students who're not interested being forced to attend and even pay deposits?

They are still hiding in their ivory tower and avoiding direct confrontation on the matters at hand. These are their SOPs; they will never tactical the issues directly but divert away the attentions on other matters and sowing discord .

Its has always been the same old story be it YOG or other events, ground level staff & volunteers fire fighting to keep things going smoothly while the head basked in the lime light of the media.

If both of them still manage to get re-elected for the next GE than its another miracle.

Minion Teo is indeed a baboon.

The peasant volunteers and children are the exploited groups who slog and prop up attendances. They are rewarded with dog food or made to stand in the rain.

Minion Teo has the gall to claim his well paid lackeys deserved accolades?!

Peasantpore now joins Commie China and Stalinist North Korea as the three pariah states riddled with dynastic politics! Woe woe woe, peasantpore!

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said nonchalantly that he ignored critics who did not give him any “constructive criticisms”:

“There are many people who are critical but constructive who send me suggestions on how to improve the games. They make a difference and improve our performance."

I don't believe. Vivian should quote examples of constructive criticisms that he received, and explain why others were not constructive.

So how did the organizers show their appreciation ? By feeding them with dog food ? If not for the much maligned critics the volunteers would still be eating dog food.

Now that the Games are over, Viv and Ser Luck have suddenly become the protectors of the volunteers.

"Constructive" criticism is another piece of armour in PAP vocabulary beside "credible" opposition. To criticise, you must help us to be constructive, to oppose, you must conform with us to be credible. PAP mastery and creativity over English language is that damn good. Have to give that to them.

Another cheebye article from TR and rubbish header from Makapaaa, i;m surprised you all still discussing in this topic, LOL :D:D:D

Its funny that they include the volunteers when they said "we worked hard". They want to make sure that when people read the criticism, they would think the critics referred to the volunteers as well.

The think is that the critics have never blamed the volunteers for the failure. In fact they empathise, otherwise, there won't be out cry over crappy food, food poisoning, delayed F1 tickets, bad treatment at RWS.

Even in justification, these 2 morons try to divert attention from them to the volunteers.

this lan jiao is PAP new golden boy

grooming him for PAP mass orgy:oIo:

They r smart to use "volunteers" as a wild card to hide their explanations.
it makes ppl feel guilty when ppl questioned their over-budget and transparency.

Using emotional tactics.

:o :( :o

the word "volunteer" is a powerful word.

if they werent volunteers, the human rights activists would be hounding YOGOC for child labor issues.

Another 300m, they can develop the transportation system on the USS Enterprise, where they say "beam me up, Spock!".

They volunteered , like I had volunteered for National Service & Reservist, I even had volunteered to set up the logistics for National Day Parades & planted so many trees, I had forgotten on Tree Planting Day, & so many charitable events I have forgotten also..all free & cheap labour, & was given packet food, the SFI packed for the volunteers; pale in comparison.

so, we are SINgapore, SINgaporeans......:D

....lucky they throw smoke-bombs only ah .....

....what happens they throw stink-bomb ....all pengsan except kraty !!!
