China despite it's insanely high level of corruption, still manage to get things done as long as the Central government deems it needs to be done. India is being drag down by democracy, and it can be REALLY ridiculous at times. Take for example the state of Andrea Pradesh. Hyderbad the capital of that state is the 2nd biggest IT city in India after Bangalore. They've been having major problems with power supply to the city recently. Not that power was never a problem, in fact having black outs 3 times a day is very common. The problem for them however is some parts of the state wants to break off into their own state and the power station workers stop working in protest because they happen to work in the part that wants to break off. All this because some politicians wants more power and convince their supporters on a need to create a new separate state.
Another major problem is the ridiculous amts of bureaucracy involve in that country. I have another example. The city of Nagpur where my office is based in. We own a plant in one of the suburbs. On the way from office to the plant we need to go across a train crossing. There is always a huge traffic jam at the train crossing coz the trains pass the road every 15min. To get around this, they started constructing a flyover. First time I was there, I looked at it and told my driver, that's not so bad, it looks almost completed. My driver told me they took 6 years to get that far and the work had stopped. The contractors are complaining they will not complete the thing coz they were not paid and the government officials stated they are not going to pay coz the thing isn't completed. Somewhere along the way the railway ministry stepped in and told the both of them they are not suppose to build a flyover there. That was 2 years ago, they finally completed the thing when I went in Dec. Compared to SG, we built a similar one in terms of both size and length along Robinson Road to accommodate the construction of the downtown line. Ours took only a couple of months to complete.
And I haven't even started on Corruption. India Road projects. In India, the quality of the roads are so bad that they get damaged after every monsoon season so they need to repair the same freaking roads every year. Basically 20% of the project profit will be split among the ministers, politicians, village head or whoever is involved.
A more ridiculous case from India involves a state forestry minister who was suppose to take care of the local nature reserve. Instead of protecting the place, he opened a logging company to chop down the trees inside the nature reserve. The reporter who tried to exposed his deeds was killed by the local mafia hired by that minister.
And for those of you who think that democracy, strong opposition and free press will deter corruption, go work in India for a while. I'm pretty sure you will change your mind
