Vincent Cheng: ISA victims must speak out

I demand an explanation from the PAP. $4.40 during the time of Cheng's arrest was a King's ransom for cleaners etc. Why was this COMMUNIST released? He should have been tried for treason and hung!

$4.40 a day is indeed low. But educating workers on bringing up their case with the relevant authorities should not get anyone arrested. Unless there are people who seized the timing and opportunity to do more than just fighting for more wages.

$4.40 an hour equates to $1,020.80 a month. In 1087, you could hire trained nurses, shorthand secretaries, lab technicians and poly grads with that pay. Vincent Cheng wanted workers to ask for that pay, which means he was a communist, because cleaners etc should not expect to receive the same pay!

He mentioned $4.40 for 8 hours of work. This is indeed low.

Not $4.40 per hour for 8 hours of work.

Oh. I am sorry. I demand an explanation as to how somehow who demands $4.40 for 8 hours of work i.e. $0.55 per hour can be a communist!!!!! He is the bane of Kensian economics :D

If I recall correctly, Vincent mentioned that such wages were even lower than in communist China, something like that. Disclaimer again, I didn't read the full reports or hear out the recordings.

If he is rooting for minimum wages, he should be re-arrested, like the MONGREL who bit his masters' hands LOUDHAILER chee soon juan.

Ok, I rephrase my question then.

Do you seriously think educating workers on their rights (just this alone) will cause them to be detained without trial for marxist conspiracy?

I cant help you with that wonder that's behind the back of your mind.

If the authorities can dole out such a term marxist conspiracy and label it on them and deem it a security threat then I am not surprise they will not hesitate to perceive and interpret educating workers on their rights not to the actual meaning of the words itself but to meanings that are hostile which could mean instigating workers emotion or inciting aggressive hostile actions and unrest in fighting for their rights. They will make the case to have you detain regardless, believe it or not.

Looks like no one seems to know the real reason for the detention. Vincent might not have not known then but he would have by now. Anyway here is the story behind all this.

The authorities have always monitored people who focus on worker's right since the days of SATU and Lim Cheng Siong. Shortly after Jurong Industrial estate was built, the Catholic Church and laypersons associated with it began to work with workers in an outreach programme. One of those was a foreigner and I think he was either a Hawaiian or Japanese. Vincent over time became his pupil. After watching them in the 70s, the foreigner was deported. In the meantime, a Catholic nun began creating waves in the old Nazareth Centre in Bukit Ho Swee with the poor and the less able. The authorities became weary again but they could not deport her aas she was a Singaporean and a Minister intervened threathening to arrest her. She was sent back to the convent.

In the early 1980s, Vincent's path crossed with a number of law students in NUS over old man's procreation policy. The students wanted to protest and the authorities stepped in and the compliant NUS Student leader by the name of Viv B and his number 2 called Simon Tay obliged.

One of them after graduating in law went on to become a student organiser in Singapore Poly Catholic student movement. The law connection also brought a number of practicising lawyers into the picture at the Geylang Centre and became involved with Filipino maids and their rights. The Liberation Theology and the shadows of Cardinal JaimiSin began to loom over old man.

The authorities kept watch and saw a link into worker's party. This was when old man lost his cool. It became clear that the Hammer was done behind the scenes by well educated people including a Harvard Grad. To make matters worse, one was married to the younger sister of Juliet Chin. And then the whole thing exploded when the link to Tan Wah Piow was made.

Old man naturally panicked and got them detained.

There was no plans for violence, no weapons acquired or stored. There was no plans to incite the masses. There was no shred of evidence to support a mass movement or even a movement to agitate.

Even Tharman then not associated with the PAP was questioned for a week.

In the course of the interrogration, something completely unrelated surfaced - Francis Seow who was acting for some of the detainees was approached by US diplomat to stand for elections against the PAP. He was then detained. It was revealed by one of the lawyers who was detained.

In fact, it was Seow's arrest and the deporting of Hank Hendrickson that was big fish that came out of the whole Marxist Conspiracy. A foreign power persuading lawyers to stand against the PAP, providing them funds and guarantee of an imunity. The discussions were held at the basement cafe along Robinson Road well known to lawyers.

To cut a long story short - the detention had no basis. There was no evidence of anything except protect worker's right which the arseholes on NTUC never did. Ask Mdm Halimah how much she earns a month. You guys will be shocked.

scrooby, who are you actually? Why do you know so much?:D

ram,how old are you, you dun seem to be someone my age? and I saw anthony yeo before, he left an impression on me as someone very amicable, funny and approachable. He also openly declare that he will not vote for PAP.:p:D May he rest in peace!

Anthony Yeo knew even more. Too bad he had gone chit-chatting with JB Jeyaretnam.

I knew bits and pieces but thanks for the whole picture put together.

Things have changed since. In the 90s, I would never have expected that a former 1987 detainee would speak out in public donning the t-shirt of Singapore's most confrontational opposition party, or a group of them releasing a book that sells in Singapore. Old man is caught in this internet world.

For a start, we could treat the Old Man and his son to the luxuries of the isolation ward. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

If the oppo wins, they should not abolish the ISA right away. They need to use it to investigate the many transgressions of the PAP. They need it to arrest all the PAP ministers and their lackeys and examine their bank accounts, starting with Old Goat. They need it to prosecute the kangaroo court judges who have perverted the justice system, as well as to investigate the various branches of the govt. such as the CPIB which have been used as the private secret force of the PAP.

Mas Selamat can be considered an ISA victim?

He will tell us he is innocent...

Instead, many Singaporeans are becoming victims of their own shortcomings. The inability to succeed in this society then leads them to believe that every woe and misfortune in their lives originates from the PAP.

In the above scenario, we start to romanticize any opponents of the PAP. Francis Seow, Vincent Cheng, MSK, Chee Soon Juan...etc suddenly become heroes of epic proportions who are disproportionately grade in simple small minds.

Actually it was the PAP that conditioned them to think that without the PAP the country and Singaporeans would fail. Where do you think the term the "Nanny State" came from. Just take one example - a Singaporean who had money could not send his child to an International school. You are ever wondered why.

85% of housing is public. Its became a political strategy that worked for the PAP. Now that the PAP is struggling to make ends meet, they now blame Singaporeans for not looking after themselves.

Take the YOG. So many mistakes and many are simple matters. Don't you think that standards have dropped. Maybe we should accelerate the recruitment of foreigners to run the country. There are already a few and they tend to be cheaper as well.

ps. could you lose the "bold" in your post. It does not make it any more important or raise the substance level. You highlight certain things and not the whole text.
