The case drew public attention after photos circulated online showing the woman in poor physical condition, disoriented and holding medical imaging scans, with visible bruises on her legs and suspected fractures.

Netizens later discovered that the woman, surnamed Wu, had a short-video account on social media with about 24,000 followers, with its IP location listed as Cambodia. Her last video was posted from Cambodia on December 6, 2025, according to online records.

The Chinese embassy said it coordinated with Cambodian police and local contacts after learning of the incident and located the woman at a hospital in Sihanoukville last Saturday (Jan 3). Due to her weak condition, she was transferred to another hospital for treatment. Her condition has since stabilized.

According to the embassy, the woman said she traveled to Cambodia after being enticed by a job offer promising high pay and later ended up living on the streets. Embassy officials have contacted her family and are assisting with arrangements for her return to China.
