But it's where Mr Chen Show Mao got down to work yesterday evening at his first Meet-the-People session.

By 8pm, there were already 40 residents waiting to see him. About 30 curious onlookers and well-wishers were also present.

The New Paper spoke to Mr Chen about the long journey he's taken to being an elected Member of Parliament - from being a top student in Singapore, to being a top lawyer in Beijing, and now, back home to serve his countrymen.

Looks like he is under great stress when the whole country is looking up to him. Meeting at void deck is a warm and willing gesture of bringing themselves down to the residents, and not to sit in air-conditioned rooms and expect the residents to turn up, take numbers and ask for permission to enter like low subjects seeking audience with His Majesty. They do it the most no frills, back-to-basic way of serving the people. To make meet the MP session beneficial and non-wayang is actually very simple, just a table, few chairs, pen, paper, and most importantly, a genuine heart and a willingness to listen pair of ears. What the ruling party lost along the way since they came to power is picked up by WP, the heart to serve the people. So simple and yet so important.

Few days ago when I read the papers and PM Lee said that PAP will create a fair & just society and I hope this will come true.

The lack of a solid communications strategist in the PAP was extremely obvious during GE 2011. Now post election, their poor EQ persists, never mind what you read about transforming, cutting salary etc.

If I were the PAP (especially the ex-MPs) I would have gained brownie points for the MIW if they had offered the immediate use of the facilities even as the real legal logistics are being sorted out. Or for the PM to come out and say, hey, fellas, we are ONE NATION, ONE PEOPLE please come and share our facilities.

THAT would kill a lot of sceptics about the PAP's sincerity in transforming for the better, to listen etc etc. Instead, we read about the residents who bring their won chairs as they wait.

The whole of Singapore owe the residents of Aljunied and Hougang a vote of thanks.

I am glad that the WP is not complaining - THAT is class.

The current situation underscores the need for a First World Parliament. If Shamugam and MIW do not understand what is First World Parliament, a picture tells a thousand words.
