Property agent gets flat seller into debt

Case of unscrupulous housing agent colluding with moneylenders

By Elizabeth Soh
When prison inmate Ahmad was released last November, he decided to sell his three-room flat to pay off about $15,000 in debts he had run up during his eight-year jail stint.

Instead, the 56-year-old ended up owing another $9,500, he says, after the property agent referred him to a moneylender to 'tide him over' while the home was put on the market.

Worse, after three months Mr Ahmad (not his real name) was still waiting for his flat to be sold.

His case is just one example of a problem highlighted by the Minister for National Development in his Budget speech last week. Mr Khaw Boon Wan referred to media reports about families selling their flats to pay their debts or short-term expenses, only to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous real estate agents, and pledged to flush them out.

If you really want to help Khaw, you must get PAP to repeal the moneylending act that makes usury legal. It is beyond me why they changed the law, knowing its implication.

what about agents who advertise that a property is in district 10 when its not?

how do you think some property agents make big money besides open legs wide wide,,,,,

Its not a bad job if you put in some hard work with abit of luck also. My brother had his agent took him on a 1 month flat viewing and in the end, he got a BTO. My agent was just sitting at the interchange swapping flies, when I walked past and enquire about some flat prices. 2 days later, she took me and my wife to our 1st flat viewing, we love the place and settle on that place.

Illegal loansharks related cases are giving them headaches.......they thought by legalizing them at least can 'contain' the problem.......typical way of disguising problems

If the moneylender is illegal, simply report the agent for abetting crime. He will get a few years jail. Kao tim.
