Unemployed and Older, and Facing a Jobless Future

The New York Times

I was recently talking to a friend at a party whose husband — in his 60s — has been unemployed for more than two years. While there are many challenges, she said, one of the hardest things is trying to balance hope with reality.

She wonders how to support him in his continued quest to find a job in his field of marketing and financial services while at the same time encouraging him to think about what his life would be like if he never worked in that field or had a full-time job again.

“I wanted to move to what I thought was a healthier place. I wanted to turn the page,” said my friend, who asked to be identified by her middle name, Shelley, since she didn’t want to publicize her family’s situation. “He saw it as vote of no confidence.”

For those over 50 and unemployed, the statistics are grim. While unemployment rates for Americans nearing retirement are lower than for young people who are recently out of school, once out of a job, older workers have a much harder time finding work. Over the last year, according to the Labor Department, the average duration of unemployment for older people was 53 weeks, compared with 19 weeks for teenagers.

There are numerous reasons — older workers have been hit both by the recession and globalization. They’re more likely to have been laid off from industries that are downsizing, and since their salaries tend to be higher than those of younger workers, they’re attractive targets if layoffs are needed.

Even as they do all the things they’re told to do — network, improve those computer skills, find a new passion and turn it into a job — many struggle with the question of whether their working life as they once knew it is essentially over.

Sorry guys, more gloom and doom coming the way of older people.

by the time you reached your sixties and you are still struggling
it only means one thing: utter failure
don't blame anyone
just blame yourself

if you want to work
if you are given some work by a very benevolent government
work with a smile
not with a face with chin touching the ground with anger, with frustration and with anguish
just look around the old folks who are still working
they are a reflection of poor morale and utter failure - misery and grief

If that stupid old fart had heeded my advice to achieve financial independence by his mid 40s, he wouldn't be stuck in the predicament he's in now.

It's his own damned fault.

this is the american situation. many americans continue to work past 60 and or find work in their 60s as they need to rely on health insurance provided by their employers plus the very fact that they squandered their chances to save and make sound investments for their "full" retirement near the age of 65. many who have retired at 65 and are able to collect their social security in full or start drawing from their 401k continue to find part or full time work to make ends meet. for many of them, spiraling healthcare cost is definitely a big chunk of their burden. those who had paid all for their homes (when they were valued between usd100k to usd200k over 40 years ago) but wanted equity out of their now higher value homes jumped into multiple home equity loans and extra borrowing and mortgages to buy newer bigger homes, spanking new suv's, and finance high & lofty debt-ridden lifestyles at the peak of the bubble. these same folks today are tapping into their 401k well ahead of their retirement, after losing almost everything except their hanes or victoria secret underwear. very soon when they reach 65, they will find their social security checks will be inadquate to cover one month's rent. on the average, an ss monthly check may provide for three cartons of instant noodles a month, two cups of coffee and one donut everyday, an occasional movie, and 2 weeks of prescription drugs. there will be nothing left for a road trip or weekend vacation to moro bay or carmel. yet, there are many who start cashing out their ss at 63, two years ahead of their fuller ss payouts. they just can't wait anymore. and the difference between 63 and 65 can be as much as usd500 per month. seniors on "fixed income", i.e. dribbling drawouts from 401k, ss checks, interest earnings from their meager savings, if any, constantly look out in the papers for "freebies", deals and donations. discount and "buy one get one free" coupons that they would discard when they were young would be valuable slips of paper today. and there were others who had it right: paid in full for their homes while they were worth 50k, sold them for more than ten times the original value during peak, moved away to "cheaper" locations to upgrade rather than bought back in at peak prices, invested and saved wisely, expanded their property portfolio during the bust, and earned extra income by being landlords. for every 2 losers, there is 1 winner. and that's pretty much on par with the political landscape in the u.s. today: 66% more-gov, big-gov, spend-all liberals; 33% less-gov, small-gov, spend-less conservatives. ironically, it's the 33% more strategic thinking fiscal conservatives who are refueling the u.s. economy today (by investing heavily when it's "cheap").

sinkies should be proud of their pap gov for providing at least a healthcare safety net. we americans have to rely on employers. the question is "what if an american is unemployed?" answer: they get broke right away with any acute medical condition requiring a visit to the hospital. for many, there's more dignity if they die. :*:

99% of those whom fail will blame others except themselves.

99% of those whom succeed will credit no one except themselves.
