Hadi Omar is Singapore's first full-time MMA practitioner

SINGAPORE : The latest to join the growing number of Singaporeans who go into sports full-time is Hadi Omar.

His sport of choice is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), which is a combination of Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing.

25-year-old Hadi, who is 1.9 metres tall, is a full-time trainer at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts.

He is blazing a new trail by going full time into MMA, as part of the Evolve Fight Team.

Hadi is graduating to a professional status after just a span of two years with the sport.

He said: "I had to go through a six-month internship with the fight team to make sure my heart was in it. The immediate plan is to compete in the local circuit that we have - the Martial Combat by Resorts World Sentosa - but the big plan is to be in the UFC (Ultimate Fight Championship), which is the big league in the Mixed Martial Arts sport."

And more young people could be following Hadi's footsteps, as the sport, introduced in Singapore just two years ago, has taken off.

There are now two outlets offering training and many competitions were also held last year.

Rafael Lima, managing director of Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, said: "I believe there are over 1,500 practitioners in Singapore. There are other Jiu-Jitsu schools now. Now there are competitors and there are people coming from Brazil to teach in Singapore."

A South East Asian championship is in the pipeline with Singapore as a regional hub as it has some of the best trainers.

The organisers claim they are also in talks with authorities to set up a National Sports Association for the MMA.
