DAVID Cameron has given the order to press ahead with the next generation of “nuclear bomber” submarines

The MoD will this week ask defence companies to start work on plans for a new secret flotilla, which will mean
doling out individual contracts worth £350million.

The subs will be designed to carry Trident inter-continental missiles with nuke warheads.

The project, which will create 1,900 jobs, comes despite bitter opposition from Nick Clegg’s party. The Lib Dems
want to scrap Trident, arguing we no longer need to be able to blitz Moscow. But a No 10 source said the Navy
needed “cutting-edge equipment”.

Downing Street unveiled the move as the PM joined other NATO leaders for their summit in Chicago last night.

The overall upgrade will cost £20billion, with the new fleet due to enter service in 2028.
