I find it hard to believe Andy Hunt. Such a big country and yet it cannot find 100 young promising athletes to fill up the allotted YOG spots.

MODERN pentathlete Kerry Prise and gymnast Laura Mitchell have both been forced to withdraw from this month's inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore with injury.

The withdrawal of Aberdeen's Prise ensures that Greg Longden will be Great Britain's sole modern pentathlon representative in the Far East.

Mitchell, meanwhile, has been replaced in the artistic gymnastics squad by Cardiff's Jessica Hogg, ensuring Great Britain still have three representatives in that sport.

With two athletes withdrawing and one replacement being called up, Great Britain's squad is now 39-strong, notably down on the 100 spots available to them.

British Olympic Association chief executive Andy Hunt has been quick to defend the size of the squad however, insisting there has not been a lack of interest from the various sports' national governing bodies.

I think Olympic committee was just trying to build another franchise. But so far it is tough. Singapore maybe was to hyped up about creating buzz so jumped into the fray. After all Oympics is once every 4 year event and if the can have an Olympic event once every 2 years then that might keep that Olympic advertising flame alive!!

I was supposed to be 2009/2010 mega buzz - casinos completed, formula 1 racing and YOG to cap it off.

It isw not so much as in cannot find 100 young athletes, but consideration is whether it is worth disrupting their training program preparing for the next full Olympic in London 2012, to send that quantity even of the host is paying for all the expenses the moments these athletes leave their doorstep.

Well said. Let see how many YOG will be held? Maybe only 3~4 times the Olympic committee will cancel the YOG.
What the meaning of YOG? Age limit 14~18 different by only 2 year of age. Is meaningless only Singapore is stupid to bite it.

Well, if you are a greenhorn Perm Sec and needed a big event to fill up you resume, you will bite anything that comes along as long as the fund, regardless of it over-shot by many many times, it does not come from your pockets.

Lack of interest. He is indirectly saying that the other sports national governing bodies are simply not interested in the YOG.

I believed the same can be said for the other countries like US, China etc. Seriously who will bother about YOG? Only PAP is still trying to kid themselves that it is a world class event while the rest of the world treat it as a non-existence event

The max spectator is 240k because PAP have reduce the seat from losing face. Even if all 240k sold out many will be repeated supporter like parent/relative.

There are many other countries vying to host - Singapore had to bid for it and eventually won over Athens, Moscow and Turin. Even Bangkok expressed interest. Of course there is China, India, Japan, the Euros, etc which are keen to organise a whole event - any time, any day.

Of the cities you listed, with due respect, I think Singapore, Bangkok and any Indian city should keep out. India has the population mass anytime but I don't think it has anything near to world class sporting tradition and facilities except perhaps for cricket, hockey and public transport overloading. Ditto Bangkok, except for perhaps football, sniping, arson, pyrotechnics and sexual techniques. Singapore has no population mass, sporting and facilities to speak off except being a branch for PRC Ping Pong Team B and Team C (call them crow or chicken, they're usually based in Geylang).
