Two-thirds of PR applications successful

An average of 46,300 people are granted Singaporean permanent resident (PR) status every year for the past eight years, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Mr Wong Kan Seng said in Parliament today.

In his reply to Mr Chiam See Tong's question about the number of PR applications received, granted and PR statuses renounced, Mr Wong said that PR applications have been increasing steadily in recent years.

From 2000 to 2008, an average of 74,500 applications for permanent residency were submitted by foreigners each year. Of these, an average of 46,300 applications were successful.

An average of 2,200 also renounced their PR status each year during the same period.

Mr Wong said that the increase in number of people granted PR was due to two factors, namely a strong economy and the need to augment Singapore's population.

A booming economy growth of 6 per cent to 8 percent between 2004 and 2007 meant that Singapore required more foreigners to work here. Most did not intend to stay long term, but "a good many" are well-qualified, skilled personnel who decided to stay longer and applied for PR.

Singapore's low fertility rate also meant that the country would age rapidly and start to decline by 2020 if the country closes its doors to foreigners. This would increase the burden of Singaporeans and the country's competitiveness would decrease.

Mr Wong also said that the Government recognizes that Singaporeans feel anxious about the large inflow of foreigners in recent years.

Singaporeans should not think that all foreigners here are PRs, he said. A large portion of foreigners are here on short-term passes, with 1,253,000 non-residents in Singapore as compared to 533,000 PRs.

While Singapore needs the continuing inflow of immigrants into the country, Mr Wong said that the government is mindful of the concerns of Singaporeans.

Between 2000 and 2008 = 9 years x 46300 = 416700 PR granted.

dont worry Lky said all successful applications are vetted by PAP so only high quality applicants will become PR. Now we have 46k world class foreigners are singaporean PRs

knn fucking pui!

THis is SERIOUSLY interesting. Figures hiding behind statistics!

Ok, there are average 46,300 PR approved each year with 2,200 renouncing their PR same period of 9 years. Meaning, each year, there are about an increase of 44,100 PR.

9 years of 44,100 = 396900!

Non Residents amount to 1.253m with a another total of 533,000 PR.

It practically means that prior to year 2000, there were only 136100 PR and the number actually increase almost 300% within that 9 years!

For 35 years of Nation building, we only have 136100 PR. But within 9 years, we have an increase of over 300%?

Now you know why HDB flats are so expensive right now.

Only 40 plus thousand a year out of population of nearly 5 million is less than 1%.

How can we reach 6.5 milion target quickly?

Right now is a good chance to import 1.5 million PRC grads, say 300,000 annually over 5 years

So we need to build housing quickly to accommodate these wonderful talent

It can be done with the right attitude and can-do spirit

Our economy needs it, our future depends on it

what a disgusting statistics. what a crappy corrupted gov, totally addicted to cheap labour, they rather let their citizens to die than limiting the amount of cheap labour flooding into singapore.

For those who criticise the policy, please offer practical alternatives for economic survival

This policy is good but the IMPORT RATE IS TOO SLOW

Do you know that the birth rate is so slow that the economy cannot be sustained without the import of FT

So many unrealistic people here, sigh... please import more FT and improve our stock quickly

Ya man.

I totally concur with besotted.
In fact, i suggest we should have FT ministers too...
but
of coz, salary should be minimised and yet deliver the best result.

Afterall, we have to be realistic and pragmatic.
Heed our elite leader calling....and in line with our
Cheaper, Better & Faster policy.

:D :p :D

PAP's solution to everything in Singapore is Increase Population.

MRT too crowded? Increase population.

Schools hard to get in? Increase population.

Jobs not enough? Increase population.

Recessionary fears? Increase population.

Homes getting unaffordable? Increase population.

I can't figure out the correlation between 'increase population' and everything else, but apparently PAP can.

Much bigger differentiation bet PR and Citizens in terms of healthcare, annuity, education cost, real monetary help ,etc.

Also differentiate bet Citizens that did NS and those that did not do any NS unless excused due to medical reasons.

Believe that if we have a large enough difference in what makes a PR or FT on EP then it is ok to bring in more.

The co relation is MASSAGING SINGAPORE GDP FIGURES.

The more FTs in Singapore, the higher the GDP figure.

ECONs 101.

Can you imagine Singapore GDP figures languishing or stagnant whilst NINISTARS pays all go sky high. They are already the LAUGHING STOCK of the whole world for their WORLD RECORD PAY for managing a country 1/8 the size of LONDON..

anyone who feel ashamed of their govt should leave.

You know the birth rate so low you should be shafting your wife every other minute!

Cannot do it yourself? No ammo? Then line up the bangla, PRC or whoever is willing. They will be willing to do it for free.:D

Problem solved.

if you don't like them, fcuk them.

or you can apply for one in a foreign country.

I think its PAP way of balancing the popluation. I've heard from a friend(Primary school teacher) who told me that it is pretty obvious who are making babies. The population of the Malays have gone up. The more money going to baby bonuses, the more they are making babies. It seems like getting more PRC and Indian FTs in is their way or keeping the ratio intact

In which case, the last guy who tried something drastic to control the population didn't really worked out(for those who cant remember, German guy, funny hair, small mustache). I don't know what makes our government think they can succeed

Root of the problem is the way the PAPa is being measured and rewarding themselves.

Their MBO is only measured by the GDP growth. Whatever else is immaterial to them and none of their concern.

The best way to get huge bonus is to drive GDP by any means, and the easiest way is to bring in any TOM, ****, and Harry(pls do not be confused with the 86 yrs one, I meant the FT type), irregardless of how the shitizens are being squeezed and is least of their concern.

After all, just give some token ang-paos before election and they will be back for another 5 years. anyway, these can take back by many times via various means.

Nearly 50K new PR/year this figure is even more that baby born in Sinkie/year.
