Sham marriage

Court documents seen by Mothership showed that the 28-year-old woman, Koi Thi Truc Linh, a Vietnamese national, met the Singaporean man, 32-year-old Bobby Thedores Tan, at a friend's house in Singapore sometime in March or April 2020.

In July of the same year, they developed a paid sexual relationship, with Tan paying Koi S$2,000 per week, reported Shin Min Daily News.

They later moved in together in a Beach Road apartment rented by Tan in September 2021.

Shortly after, Tan sought to end the relationship as he was facing financial difficulties and was unable to pay both Koi and the rent.

He reportedly owed her about S$14,000 by the time the breakup was initiated.

Koi then proposed that the pair get married so that she could prolong her stay in Singapore.

It would also enable her to obtain Long-Term Visit Passes and subsequently apply for Singapore PR with Tan as her sponsor.

In exchange, she promised to pay Tan a sum of money if she was successful in becoming a PR.

Tan agreed to the arrangement, and the pair's marriage was solemnised on Feb. 17, 2022.

Between then and Koi's arrest, Tan sponsored a total of three Long-Term Visit Passes for her.

Lying on application

Court documents also indicated that Koi lied about the purpose of her marriage when applying for a Long-Term Visit Pass on Mar. 14, 2023.

She declared that she did not enter the marriage with Tan to obtain a long-term stay in Singapore, despite knowing it was untrue.

The application was approved on Apr. 27, 2023, and Koi was issued a year-long Long-Term Visit Pass.

Arrest

Sometime in August 2023, Tan, as Koi's sponsor, also lied about the purpose of their marriage during another Long-Term Visit Pass application.

He claimed that he did not marry Koi so that she could attain Permanent Residence.

Both Tan and Koi were arrested by authorities on Nov. 11, 2024.

Koi faced four charges, three for false statements she made during Long-Term Visit Pass applications on Feb. 28, 2022, Mar. 14, 2022 and Jan. 15, 2024, and one for entering into a paid marriage with a Singapore citizen knowing it was for an immigration advantage.

She pleaded guilty to one of the charges and was handed seven weeks' jail.

Tan was previously also charged with three counts of violating immigration laws. He pleaded guilty on Jan. 16 and was sentenced to seven weeks' jail.

ICA said that it "takes a very serious view of persons who provide false information or conceal material facts during their applications for any immigration facility."

"Offenders will be dealt with firmly. This may include depriving them of or revoking their immigration facility."
