A woman from the US was one of two people who were killed by a knife-wielding man in downtown Beijing on Wednesday, local police said on Thursday.

A spokesperson from the municipal public security bureau said police are trying to contact her relatives.

The attack occurred outside a shopping mall in the Chaoyang district around 5 pm. Hundreds of bystanders witnessed the incident.

The spokesperson said police apprehended the suspect, a 27-year-old man surnamed Xiao from east China's Shandong province, on the spot after being alerted to the attack.

According to a preliminary police probe, the unemployed Xiao arrived in Beijing at the beginning of June, however the motive of the attack is still unknown.

The suspect has claimed that he is mentally ill and told police that he "always felt that he was looked down on by others."

Police in Beijing have contacted their counterparts in the suspect's home province in order to obtain more information about the man's medical history and have contacted the relatives of the other victim, a Chinese male.
