Two robbery suspects who allegedly held up a Starbucks have been taken into custody after the car one of them used to escape was pursued in a dramatic police chase.

The alleged robber drove for several miles through Miami with patrol cars following him along the Interstate 95 freeway before the pursuit became too dangerous and was called off.

A police helicopter continued to track the vehicle and filmed footage as the driver crashed and continued on foot.

He attempted to jump into a residential neighbourhood called Miami Gardens but became snagged on a fence as officers closed in on him.

He managed to get away and then attempted to steal a car from a woman who was outside her home.

The woman turned and fled, leaving the man with no other option but to continue running.

The woman, named only as Marilyn, told CBS News: "I saw him coming over the fence yelling 'Give me your keys, give me your keys' and I looked again and he had both his hands occupied, one was holding his money and the other was holding his pants.

"I didn't see a gun and that's what prompted me to run," said Marilyn. "I'm so grateful that I had the presence of mind. I'm thankful I didn't fall.

"It was a quick, quick decision. I didn't want to give up my keys. I thought if he got me down, it could have been worse," she said.

She said he tried to steal the keys that were in her front door, but when he found they didn't work in her car he went to a neighbour's house where the occupant told her son to get his gun.

While the alleged robber was moving from house to house, police had time to arrive on the scene and he was eventually confronted by an officer who held him at gunpoint before other officers arrived to take him into custody.
