Two cops jailed for taking bribes

IPOH: Two policemen have been jailed 18 months and fined a total of RM20,000 each for taking bribes.
L/Kpl Mohd Fauzi Embong, 33, and Kpl Zulkiflee Mohamed, 53, from the Manjung police patrolling unit, were convicted of soliciting and accepting bribes from one Arban Shiti as an inducement not to take action against him for a drug-related offence.
L/Kpl Mohd Fauzi and Kpl Zulkiflee were charged with soliciting RM1,000 from Arban in front of a house in Taman Setia Jaya in Setiawan at 12.15am on Nov 17, 2010.
They were also charged with accepting RM300 in front of a post office in Setiawan at 12.50am on the same day.
In the first charge, each man was sentenced to a year’s jail and fined RM10,000 in default three months’ jail.
For the second charge, they were jailed six months and fined RM10,000 each in default three months’ jail.
They paid their fines.
Sessions court judge Julie Lack Abdullah, however, allowed a stay of execution of the jail sentences pending an appeal.
In the same court, the judge discharged and acquitted two other policemen who were accused of agreeing to accept, solicit and accept bribes from a lorry diver on the North-South Expressway on March 20, 2009.
Sjn Norzaid Hamzah had faced four charges while Klp Ahmad Ronzi Ismail had five counts of bribery against him.
They had been accused of taking the bribes as an inducement not to take action against lorry driver New Hock Heng for carrying unlicensed cockle spat, an offence under the Fisheries Act.
