A Singapore prison officer allegedly helped an inmate smuggle nude photographs and other prohibited goods into prison in exchange for S$3,700.

Mohammad Asri Bin Abd Rahim, 39, a Singaporean, was charged in court on Jul. 25.

He faces five charges of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1960 for accepting a total of S$3,700 from an inmate on seven occasions between August 2021 and June 2022.

The inmate, 50-year-old Mohamad Yusof Kasim, who is in jail, faces five charges for allegedly bribing Asri.

2 other inmates charged

Yusof is accused of getting other inmates to help him pass the bribes to Asri.

Two other inmates were also charged on Friday in connection with Asri's alleged offences: Singaporean Wilson Ang, 37, and Singaporean Murali Vigneshwaran, 36.

They are accused of abetting Yusof in giving Asri bribes.

Both face one charge each for assisting Yusof in giving Asri the money on some occasions.

The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) said the prohibited items included magazines, nude photographs and prescription drugs.

All four men indicated that they would be pleading guilty, CNA reported.

Prison Service launched investigations

In its statement on Jul. 25, the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) said it was alerted to Asri smuggling nude photographs into prison for an inmate in exchange for money on Oct. 10, 2022.

SPS immediately launched internal investigations into the matter, which revealed that Asri had received money from an inmate for smuggling nude photographs into prison.

SPS then referred the case to CPIB and provided its full assistance to the CPIB in its investigation.

The officer has since been interdicted on half pay, pending the outcome of the case.

"SPS officers are expected to uphold the law and maintain highest standards of conduct and integrity. SPS takes a very serious view of its officers who break the law.

Any SPS officer found to have done so will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law, including being charged in court."
For each count of corruptly accepting a bribe, an offender could be fined up to S$100,000, jailed for up to five years, or both.

For corruptly giving a bribe or abetting such a gift, the penalties are the same.
