INDIA - The family of a 19-year-old university student who was supposed to marry her father's 35-year-old boss had to stop the wedding after a women's group reported to the police that she was being forced into the marriage, Malaysia Nanban said.

First year university student S. Lakshmipriya had earlier SMSed her friends to say she was against the arranged marriage.

The friends contacted a private TV station to seek help on Saturday.

The station brought the matter to the attention of the women's group, which rushed to the Central Mumbai police station to make a report.

The parents refuted Lakshmi's allegation, saying she had consented to the engagement which took place a month ago.

The girl said her parents had arranged for the marriage against her wishes and had kept her locked up in a room. However, she managed to get her mum's mobile phone and sent two SMSes to her friends.

They are still practicing male domination society in some parts of India especially the rural area where it is highly affected.
