PE: Candidates respond to WP's charges against HDB

SINGAPORE: Presidential candidate Dr Tony Tan has said the HDB should investigate the issue of transferring community sites in Aljunied GRC to the People's Association (PA) to ensure that proper procedures were followed.

Speaking in response to reporters after visiting a market at New Upper Changi Road on Tuesday, Dr Tan said he is concerned if there was any unfairness in the transfer of the HDB owned sites.

He wondered if this had been done intentionally, or whether it was a mistake.

Workers' Party chairman Sylvia Lim had accused the HDB of abusing its power as land owner by transferring the management rights of 26 open spaces from the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council to the People's Association.

Ms Lim added that the PA curtailed the ground presence of the elected WP MPs by warning residents who apply for permits to hold events at these sites not to invite the elected WP MPs or risk having their applications turned down in future.

"It's important that justice and fairness should be done. Not only that but that the public should see that justice and fairness has been done," said Dr Tan.

You can accuse us of political apathy. But, you can never accuse Singaporeans of stupidity.

I am amazed at the Peoples' Association's (and now Phoney Tan's) response to the Workers' Party assertions about WP MPs being deprived of an opportunity to be invited guests at the 7 month festivites. It has turned out that Chen Show Mao had been invited as a guest at a couple of 'Hungry Ghost' festival dinners. But, the organisers had to withdraw the invitation because the Peoples' Association informed that they would not grant future permission if the WP MP was invited.

This first surfaced via a facebook update by Mr Chen Show Mao and subsequently a press release by Ms Sylvia Lim indicating that HDB had granted leases at several places in the Alunied GRC to the Peoples' Association and taken away management of those parts of the estate from the Town Council. This had been done after the General Elections this year. This is in iself shocking as it suggests partisan politics at play in our public institutions. There is an important value that any self-respecting democracy must uphold: the independance and neutrality of the civil service.

But, I am totally stunned at the audacity of the PA's (and now Phoney Tony's) response.

I challenge Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam, PA, HDB and PAP to sue Chen Show Mao, Sylvia Lim Swee Lian and WP for defamation if they think that the WP side is on the wrong. Otherwise, apologize for their so-called honest mistake return the custodian rights of those lands to WP Aljunied TC. Then, let it be ratified that there's no such thing as an elected MP (whether government or opposition) can't be invited to any constituency event. This is the sickest joke in the world.
