True Story: Legendary Captain Madcow In Action

It happened this morning at AMK Avenue 1 market, rebuilt and reopening after a fire a couple of years ago. Inderjit Singh was the guest-of-honour. It so happened that NSP decided to have their North Star paper sales and outreach there too, led by Sec-Gen Cpt. (NS) Goh Meng Seng, with members in party uniform of course. Apparently, Inderjit was agitated by that and called police to stop them. Would NSP turn into another SDP and TBT, or simply change Tshirts and run away, one wonders. But let's see, this was what transpired:

Police: Hello, you all there. Cannot sell newspapers here. Please leave now or I summon.

GMS: Why cannot sell? (Showing a copy of the paper and pointing on it.) See what's there, officer?

Police: (Taking a closer look.) Oh, MITA licence number.

GMS: So why cannot sell?

Police: Errr...the MITA licence means you can print but you cannot sell. You need NEA hawker licence to sell. You don't stop, I summon you.

GMS: (Pushing the copy further forward.) Officer, can you eat this?

Police: You trying to be funny is it? Of course can't eat.

GMS: Then what has it got to do with environmental and food hygiene laws?

Police: Errr...please lah, I just doing my job, go somewhere else I don't care. Here got MP not happy.

GMS: And I'm just exercising my right. You can summon me, here's my IC. I won't pay, tell your IO can prepare for court case straight away.

Police: Don't be mad lah, go court pay even higher fine.

GMS: No, go court also I won't pay. I'll go jail. Now officer, are you going to summon or not, under which chapter which section?

Police: No lah...please lah...just go away somewhere else, can? Please?

GMS: (Putting his IC back into his wallet.) No. I decide where I want to go and it's here I want to be.

Police: OK OK...don't cause trouble and don't go near the MP, OK?

GMS: I'll think about it. Now if that's all, you can go report back to him.

In our course of political work, we will face such situation once in a blue moon. I do not think the MP would call the police. Normally it is the grassroot leaders who are overzealous that prompt them to call the police.

It is just unfortunate coincidence that NSP conducts its REGULAR Sunday outreach at the market whereby the MP is supposed to initiate the open ceremony. Obviously, the grassroot leaders are not very happy about it.

Well, as far as I know, we didn't disturb them, just carry out our own activity. According to one of our member, one grassroot leader approached him and threaten to call the police. He even insisted that we give him get a "FREE COPY" of our newsletter! LOL! It is quite hilarious, really.

Anyway, the plain cloth police approach me and take down my particulars. I take down theirs. They are young officers who are unfortunately caught in between this kind of situation. I told them unless PAP government declare that all opposition parties cannot sell their newspapers as part of our political activities, I will continue to sell our papers. Well, he insisted that I have broken the law on illegal hawking, but I said, isn't that under NEA? Why are you here then?

The police officers say that if they have evidence that I sold the newspaper to other people, they could summon me.

Anyway, the two young officers are not so rude, so I remain cordial to them. I just told them that it is unfortunate that our political activity clashes with theirs and I understand the police officers are just doing their job. I said, if you want to give me summon, please go ahead. I won't pay the summon and prefer to go to court. I want to find out whether the PAP government has finally decided to prevent opposition parties to sell their messages on the ground or not. And I won't pay the higher fines if convicted by the court. I would prefer to go to jail and there is really so much political capital to be gained. I say, go and talk to your superior.

The police officers, seem persistent in summoning me, asked me again, "Did you sell the papers?" I said, "Of course I did!" and that is end of conversation.

There are many funny people you would meet on the ground. There will be people who will argue with you so loudly (so illogical and incoherent) as if you have done something bad to him. There will be people who will just scold you out for nothing. Well, at least such episodes make our political engagement more colorful.

You're too benevolent towards your political opponents. Grassroots don't call police unless MP "express displeasure." It's good to be benevolent, but don't be naively benevolent. This is the Singh who sang to to the press about your good friend James Gomez saying wayang in private conversation.

Bravo! But the young police a bit blur. If I was the police, I'd call for SOC (red bus) and have you all arrested under unlawful assemby and unlawful procession to promote a common cause. Cordon off the entire market and get SB to escort the MP out to a place of safety, cancelling all further events for his safety. Then that Inderjit Singh would faint and next time dare not anyhow call his grassroots call police.

DEAR GMS,

You did the right thing in standing up to those policemen and the PAP running dogs from that mother-fcuking Bayee Singh's party.

However, I feel that you should not let this incident go unchallenged. I urge you to pursue this matter with the Commisioner of Police. I am sure all of us here want to know whether opposition members are allowed to sell party newsletters in public or not. In the process, you & NSP would be making political capital out of this incident. It's definitely a win-win situation for you!
