The Tesla Model Y has been confirmed as the best-selling car around the world in 2023, outselling both the Toyota Rav4 and the Toyota Corolla.
The Model Y first emerged as a best seller in the first quarter of last year, and now data firm Jato Dynamics has confirmed that it maintained this status for the entire year, selling 1.23 million cars.
This was a clear lead over the Toyota Rav4, which sold 1.07 million vehicles, as well as a much cheaper Corolla which had 1.01 million units delivered.
This was first predicted a few years ago by Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, before the car was even launched.
Here in Australia, the Model Y has been a hugely popular model since it’s launch in June 2022, selling more than 37,000 with the most popular variant being the single-motor RWD.
In 2023, it made 28,769 sales, but was pipped in the final rankings by both the Toyota Rav4 and MG ZS, partly due to a ship with biosecurity concerns being turned around and those vehicles not getting delivered to customers in the last quarter of 2023.

It was the best-selling electric vehicle by a significant margin over electric vehicles from other brands.
Prices of its Model Y have also been reduced and it now starts at $65,400, helping it qualify for the remaining state incentives, such as Queensland’s EV rebate which was increased in 2023 to $6,000.
The latest data compiled by
carloop shows that the Queensland rebate assisted drivers making the switch to cleaner vehicles in 2023, increasing by 445% on registered Teslas in 2022.

With a total of 10,380 new Tesla vehicles making it onto Queensland roads during the year, the Model Y accounted for 62% of them.
Tesla continues to dominate sales and with more Model Ys on the road than ever before, it’d continue on this path to remain the best-selling vehicle in 2024 as well.
