Tony Scott, director of "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder" and "Crimson Tide," had inoperable brain cancer, a source close to him told ABC News.The famed director died Sunday after jumping from a bridge in Los Angeles, authorities said.
Police said they received a 911 call at about 12:30 p.m. that an individual had jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The body was recovered around 3 p.m., when it was identified by authorities as Scott, according to Lt. Joseph Bale of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed today.
The Coroner's Office found several notes to loved ones in Scott's car, a spokesman told The Associated Press. A suicide note was later found at his office, according to the AP.
"I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time," Scott's spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement, according to the AP.
Scott, 68, was perhaps best known for directing "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise in 1986, which went on to gross more than $300 million worldwide, according to IMDB.com. The duo worked again in the 1990 film "Days of Thunder."
The British-born director also frequently worked with Denzel Washington, most recently in the 2010 film "Unstoppable." They collaborated on four other films: "Crimson Tide," "Man on Fire," "Deja Vu" and "The Taking of Pelham 123."
Scott was the younger brother of producer and director Ridley Scott. Together, the brothers formed their own production company, Scott Free Productions. Their company produced the CBS dramas "NUMB3RS" and "The Good Wife."The 2012 blockbuster "Prometheus" was the latest film released by their production company.
Other Tony Scott films include "True Romance," written by Quentin Tarantino, "The Fan," with Robert De Niro, and "Enemy of the State," starring Will Smith.
In a tweet Sunday, director Ron Howard said, "No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day."
"Most of the obits for Tony Scott will mention "Top Gun" first, but my favorite will always be "True Romance." RIP," tweeted film critic Richard Roeper.
Scott was survived by his wife, Donna, and their twin sons.

ABCNews.com initially reported Monday that a source said Scott had an inoperable brain tumor. The site later changed the story to say the "cancer report appears in doubt."
On Monday evening, Craig Harvey, a chief for the coroner's office said, "The family told us it is incorrect that he has inoperable brain cancer," reports the Los Angeles Times.
Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that Scott recently told friends he had a hip operation, but many feared it was a recurrence of cancer.
"He has been suffering from cancer and he had a relapse," a source close to the director told The Post. Another source said, "He had been in the hospital earlier this summer, in the past few months, and he had been recuperating. The official story was it was a hip operation, but people suspected he underwent another cancer operation." A third source added, "He did have cancer, and for a while, he was cancer-free."
TMZ reports that Donna Scott, Tony's wife, told investigators that reports of brain cancer are "absolutely false." She added, according to TMZ, that Scott did not have any other severe medical issues.

Preliminary autopsy results confirmed that Scott's death, which baffled investigators and much of Hollywood, was a suicide, caused by blunt force trauma and drowning.
The 68-year-old British-born director of such blockbusters as "Top Gun" and "Beverly Hills Cop II" had therapeutic levels of the anti-depressant Mirtazapine and the prescription sleep-aid Lunesta in his system, coroner's investigators found.
But the findings shed no light on a motive for Scott to commit suicide. A coroner's spokesman said a final report was still two weeks away.
Family members have dismissed early reports that Scott was suffering from inoperable brain cancer and Craig Harvey, operations chief for the coroner, has previously said that there were no obvious signs of a tumour. The preliminary autopsy report made no mention of any evidence of serious illness.
Investigators have offered no theories as to why Scott took his life, and a note he left behind did not explain the suicide.
The last person to see Scott was an onlooker parking his car on the Vincent Thomas Bridge over Los Angeles Harbor, who saw the director leap into the water just after noon on Aug 19. His body was recovered by law enforcement several hours later.
The bridge, the surface of which clears the harbour's navigation channel by a height of about 185 feet (56 metres), connects the port district of San Pedro at the southern tip of Los Angeles to Terminal Island in the harbour.
Scott, born in northern England and frequently seen behind the camera in his signature faded red baseball cap, is credited with directing more than two dozen movies and television shows and producing nearly 50 titles.
He built a reputation for muscular but stylish high-octane thrillers that showcased some of Hollywood's biggest stars in a body of work that dated to the 1980s and established him as one of the most successful action directors in the business.
At the time of his death, Scott was reported to be involved in developing several film projects including a sequel to his biggest hit, the 1986 fighter-jet adventure "Top Gun," which starred Tom Cruise.
The brother of Oscar-winning director Ridley Scott, he is survived by his third wife, Donna, with whom he had two children.
