Sorry lian-mei, moi think WKW is way, way overrated. He's trying too hard to be the Asian Kubrick and it shows. His movies take forever to make and he always uses the same cast.

My point exactly. But no Wong Kar Wai movie means ze list is not atas enough.

Having said that, The Grand Master was a visual treat yet it lost to a Sinkie film (Yes a Sinkie film) in ze 2013 Golden Horse Best Movie Award. Ouch.

How would you react when your dead son returns home in a decayed state?

You can watch the whole thing here. Fucking creepy movie.

I'll give him credit for beautifying violence with slow-mo in that one.

loved that movie. but for some reason French movies always have pamcet endings. another one of the same vintage :

le pacte des loups
That one has very evidence of HK fight choreography. I have the DVD and the behind the scenes revealed it was the famous Yuen Woo Ping choreographing the fight scenes.
Mark Dacascos was great in it.

I believe this was the first Thai horror flick that made the whole world going crazy over Asian horror.

Great movie about a bunch of bahyi soldiers guarding a fortress against Afghans.

Comes with a nice song too.

oh really? I had no idea. I was too obsessed trying to figure out what the killer beast was. Thanks for the info!

Actually I was squinting really hard trying to figure out if it was really Mark Dacascos or not. After halfway decided that it really was him... I don't know if you know, but HK kungfu movies are really popular not only in the US but in France too. I guess it was an easy decision for them to hire Yuen Woo Ping.

Speaking of Mark, I remember him in the film crying freeman. His antagonist was one of the best Japanese actors I have watched play a yakuza boss. Not a Yakuza boss realistically, but what a non-Yakuza thinks a boss should look like. Name escapes me.

You not only watch expert but movie expert too. Tell me. How in the world do you choose what movies to watch?

I get so fed up watching lousy movie end up not watching at all.

I started watching foreign movies in 2000. Hollywood has stopped producing good movies by then. They are too cliche and playing too safe.
There are really many gems in the foreign film genre. The only biggest deterrent is the lack of subtitles.

I think this was based on an historical event. Something like the Sikhs version of 300. I can't remember the name of the event now....

yah... really too boring. brain in neutral eat popcorn. even the so called award winning ones.

Tell you what though, 2 movies or more accurately 2 directors in the anglo world still stand out for me.

Wes Anderson for the Grand Budapest Hotel

and George Miller for Mad Max and Happy Feet.
