Three to be charged with murder over incident along Circular Road on Christmas Eve that led to man's death

SINGAPORE - Three people will be charged with murder after the death of a man following an incident along Circular Road on Christmas Eve last year.

Responding to a call for assistance at around 3am on Dec 24, 2015, the police found two 30-year-old men with injuries along Circular Road. They were sent to Singapore General Hospital for treatment.

One of the men succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Jan 1 this year, the Singapore Police Force said in a statement on Wednesday night (Jan 6).

A total of 14 suspects - 11 men and three women aged between 20 and 42 - have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Three will be charged in court with murder, which carries the death penalty.

Nine have already been charged with rioting, while one more will also be charged with rioting on Thursday (Jan 7). If convicted, they face up to seven years in jail and caning.

Police investigations are ongoing.

SINGAPORE - Three Singaporean men were charged with murder, and one with rioting, on Thursday (Jan 7), after the death of a 30-year-old American man following an incident along Circular Road on Christmas Eve last year.

Muhammad Khalis Ramlee, Muhammad Haziq Hashim and Muhammad Izzuandy Yusof, all age 23, are accused of intentionally causing the death of Mr John Denley Nelson, a Universal Studios Singapore stuntman. The trio face the mandatory death penalty if convicted of the charges.

Another Singaporean man, Syed Muhammad Salleh Syed Sallahudin, also 23, faces a charge of rioting, by being part of an unlawful assembly that comprised at least 17 people, including Khalis, Haziq and Izzuandy.

The group is alleged to have assaulted eight victims, including Mr Nelson. Salleh faces up to seven years' jail and caning, if convicted.

District Judge Christopher Goh granted the police prosecutor's application to remand the four suspects for a week at the Central Police Division, with permission to take them out for investigations.

Their cases will be mentioned again on Jan 14.

Mr Nelson, who was from Michigan in the US, came to Singapore in 2009.

He was hurt badly after a brawl outside a Circular Road club, near Mogambo Bar, in the wee hours of Dec 24, last year.

It was reported that he had suffered traumatic head injuries and was put in an induced coma at the intensive care unit of Singapore General Hospital. He died on Jan 1, without regaining consciousness.

Mr Nelson's employers, Amphibian Stunts, which produces and manages the Waterworld @ USS live show, had said he had been with the company for six years.

In a statement on Wednesday (Jan 6), the police said a total of 14 suspects - 11 men and three women aged between 20 and 42 - had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Other than Salleh, nine others have already been charged with rioting.

SINGAPORE - A fourth Singaporean man has been charged with the murder of a 30-year-old American stuntman in an incident along Circular Road on Christmas Eve last year.

Masazlie Mohamed Salleh, 42, who had been charged earlier with rioting, had his charge amended to murder on Friday (Jan 8). He is accused of causing the death of Mr John Denley Nelson, a Universal Studios Singapore stuntman.

If convicted, he faces the death penalty, or life imprisonment with caning.

He is being remanded at the Central Police Division. His case will be heard again next Tuesday (Jan 12).

On Thursday (Jan 7), three other Singaporean men were charged with murder, and one with rioting, in relation to the incident.

Mr Nelson reportedly fell and hit his head on the ground after trying to stop a brawl in the early hours of Dec 24, last year. He died in hospital on New Year's Day and was cremated here two days later.

According to court documents, 15 of his 17 alleged attackers have been identified. Seven other victims were also hurt by the known assailants - 13 men aged 20 to 45 and two women aged 22.

Mr Nelson, who was from Michigan in the US, came to Singapore in 2009 to work at Universal Studios on Sentosa.

According to an online fund-raising campaign set up by a friend, he suffered traumatic head injuries and was put in an induced coma at Singapore General Hospital.

He died on Jan 1 without regaining consciousness.
