Michaela Harte murder: Hotel insists there was no security breakdown

By Luke Byrne
Wednesday, 12 January 2011
Last night Naiade Resorts Ltd, which runs the Legends Hotel resort, told the Irish Independent that a breakdown in security was not to blame for Ms Harte's murder.

A spokesman for the company insisted the horrific crime could have happened "anywhere in the world".

He said: "We are an international group with full security services. The property has a security manager and a number of staff support him."

Hotel manager Brice Lunot and Naiade chief executive Paul Jones issued a joint statement yesterday.

In it, Mr Jones extended condolences and sympathy to the family of the victim.

The statement reaffirmed the hotel's commitment to cooperate with the police investigation.

The Legends Hotel, featuring in the brochures of six of Ireland's major tour operators, is top of the pile when it comes to luxury, boasting a luxury spa, three swimming pools and five restaurants.

It was voted the number one destination among Irish honeymooners last year.
(NOT ANYMORE)

Michaela Harte 'killed after disturbing intruder'

Police in Mauritius were last night poised to charge three men in connection with the murder of Ms Harte, daughter of Tyrone GAA boss Mickey Harte.

It is understood officers have completed preliminary inquiries and are satisfied they have enough evidence to bring the three before the courts.

Yesterday, it emerged the intruder used a 'dummy' magnetic key card to gain access to Ms Harte's room at 3.42pm on Monday. Just two minutes later, Michaela (27) used her key to enter the room, where police believe she disturbed the intruder.

A post mortem showed she was strangled and suffered blows to the head after putting up a fierce struggle.

Yesterday, her devastated father Mickey, flanked by two of his sons, said at the family home: "Our hearts are broken.

"We just loved our Michaela. She was such a good girl. Every father says that about their daughter, but I can say that without a shadow of doubt. She was a gem and we will always remember her."

Michaela Harte murder: Newlywed left husband to get biscuits from room

Harte murder probe after paradise island honeymoon ends in horror
It was just after 3.30pm on Monday afternoon and Michaela Harte left the hotel restaurant and headed for room 1025 to collect a little slice of home.

She had just had a sun-kissed lunch with her husband at one of the five beachside restaurants of her luxurious hotel.

She had decided to return to their room where she had kept some biscuits she had brought from home.

She planned to come straight back to where her husband was sitting so they could enjoy a simple pleasure -- some tea and biscuits.

Unbeknownst to her, a killer was lurking in her room, whom police believe may have used a magnetic key card to gain access. Michaela fought desperately for her life, but was overcome and strangled to death.

Her new husband became concerned when his bride did not return within 20 minutes so went back to their room to look for her.

There he made a grim discovery -- his wife lying dead on her back near the bathtub on the bathroom floor.

There were traces of blood in the bath and bruises on her head. The bedroom was in a state of disarray.

Devastated, he raised the alarm.

General manager of the Legends Hotel, Brice Lunot, rushed to their room, accompanied by the hotel doctor Dr Sunnassee.

The doctor administered first aid, but it was too late.

Police and emergency workers soon arrived on the scene.

An autopsy by the Chief Police Medical Officer, Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin confirmed that Michaela had died of strangulation -- she had also received blows to the head.

Detectives questioned Mr McAreavey, but he was released shortly afterwards.

The popular daughter of Tyrone football manager Mickey Harte who had married Down footballer John McAreavey at Ballymacilroy Church Co Tyrone on December 30 had landed in the tropical island just two days previously.

The couple had flown out to the idyllic island of Mauritius on Saturday to enjoy the second leg of their dream honeymoon after spending some time in Dubai.

Two of three Michaela accused ‘confess’ to murder

Abinash Treeboowoon (28), a room attendant at the Legends Hotel, and his supervisor Sandip Monea (41), both Mauritian natives, have both confessed to killing Harte in her bedroom, RTÉ reports, citing local police.

The two men had been provisionally charged with murder at a court hearing earlier today. A third man, room attendant Raj Theekov (33), had been provisionally charged with conspiracy to murder.

Earlier, Today FM and Newstalk had both quoted Mayessen Nagapachetty, a journalist with Mauritian agency News Now, who said Treeboowoon had admitted to fighting Michaela in her bedroom before pushing her into the bathtub and strangled her.

“He went into the room to rob, and then sometime later he fell face to face with the woman, which is Michaela Harte,” Nagapachetty reported.

“They had a fight together.. and then in the struggle he pushed the woman there, and carried the woman into the bathtub, and strangled her to death.”

RTE’s Drivetime, however, quoted a Mauritian barrister who said it was “quite common” for a defendant in Mauritian cases to retract confessions at a later time, claiming that they had been coerced.

Appearing in court earlier today, Treeboowoon had insisted he was roughly treated by Mauritian police during their questioning.

All three of the men who had appeared in court eralier had been remanded in custody until a week from today, January 19.

Michaela was found in the bathtub by Down footballer John on Monday afternoon; she had returned to the bedroom to retrieve a packet of biscuits when she was attacked and killed.

She and McAveaney had been married on December 30, and had only arrived in Mauritius two days before her death.

TheJournal.ie was unable to find a police officer in Mauritius who was willing to confirm the reports of any confessions.
