SINGAPORE: The five St Margaret's Secondary School girls who shaved their heads in support of the Hair for Hope campaign will not have to wear wigs, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat on Wednesday.

The minister, in a Facebook post, said that he had spoken to the school's principal, Mrs Marion Tan, about the matter.

He also said that it was reasonable to ask if and how exceptions can be made under special circumstances, adding that Mrs Tan, on her part, has also reflected on her decision.

She understood that the girls wanted to show empathy and solidarity with cancer patients by going bald, said the minister. Mrs Tan now supports all five in their wish not to conceal their shaved heads, he added.

Mr Heng said he is also glad that the principal, teachers and students of the school have resolved this and will move on.

The school had previously made the five girls promise to wear wigs as a condition for their participation in the campaign.

The five complied but two subsequently said they developed rashes from wearing wigs.

I support Heng Swee Kiat in this matter, although he is from the lui-kong darkside

Wha HSK so kind...but lest you forget, he was LKY's PP. So he is still a PAP stooge at heart.

Principal really can't make it. CEP is too low. Need to trouble minister to interfere a hairdo issue. Clearly the bald teenagers have better judgment than their principal.

The teenagers might win...but PAP will find something else with them

I was thinking that too. So many problems in the singapore school systems, like not enough space for local born kids, foreign students getting free scholarships, high pressure and high stress, etc. And this fucker minister got time to kow tim 5 botak girls and their stupid principal. Pay this idiot million $ salary to do this? What a joke.

Re: This Minister got some common sense....makes Principal "reflects" on her shortcom

St Margaret's School teacher has posted on her Facebook page to shed some light on what's going on - the girls did it 'to rebel, make a statement'

She also added that the girls did it for themselves, not for the charity.

One of the girls even tweeted 'goodbye marion' (Marion Tan is the principal)

'My St. Marg students shared with me that the girls who refused to wear wigs did that on purpose - to rebel, make a statement. To my students, they broke the school rule and the promise. To me, they did it for themselves, not for charity. One girl even had the audacity to write "Bye Marion!" on her tweet. I really hope someone will speak up for the principal and that she doesn't step down.'

The principal, teachers & students are supporting this because of a age old tradition of porlumpar! The supporting parties of course no question asked will support be it silently or with actions but those that have criticized would only shut their gap because they are sucking up to the minister! And the minister himself is merely following the order handed down by some cancer stricken leader that have the advise of a spin doctor!

Re: This Minister got some common sense....makes Principal "reflects" on her shortcom

The principal should not get any bonus this year for this.

Re: This Minister got some common sense....makes Principal "reflects" on her shortcom

The principal should face a public caning.

Re: This Minister got some common sense....makes Principal "reflects" on her shortcom

This shows what high quality ministers we have. They deserve every penny of their salary.

This is not micro manage.

Ministers have to be seen to be doing the right things. And this issue being something that is likely to cause at least some disquiet among the people, PAP can either ignore it or do something. HSK made the right call by telling the P to back off, and having it be known.

That's what being politically astute is all about.

I hate Lesbians.

I'm with the P on this one.

This is akin to the town council cleaning fiasco.
You mean to say this type of issue over 5 schoolgirls is a minister level to solve problem?
What's all the jiakliaobees doing in MOE?
Who or which department do school principals report to?
Should already have being able to settle it at that level....every Kuching kurau issue the minister also have to chap one leg and hold a press conference?
Shows something fail big time in MOE.
In MOE below the minister they got a MOS, 2 x Parl Sec, 2 x PS (1 paper general), a director general (whore Jinx's sis) + countless directors.....you mean no one besides the minister can resolve this?

This PAP IB going by the nick of Jarga8 really can't make it. Clearly guest readers and other Samsters have better judgment. Here's why:

WongMengMeng, all of us already confessed that we are PAP IB.

At least PAP pays GD, Lock, me and many others PAP IB double for working on public holidays.

Based on my pap ib database, one of sammyboy nick is the current changi chalet warden. If WMM and his clones continue to waste our time, the warden will have special treatment for the tikko cheapo new inmate. ….

Re: This Minister got some common sense....makes Principal "reflects" on her shortcom

Aiya!!! Heng is wayang lah. If he didn't step out to say some goodies thing to make him feel good after onslaught outcry from online media, he will be sitting quietly waiting to see how things unveil. The St Magrate's school prinicpal is a no brainer too. As a principal, her role is to cultivate the heart of their students and not the hardware like stupid hairwig or rules. No wonder Singapore has so many rules with no heart. All these people can go jump bedok reservoir for major shake up in their soul.

Yup, an 'overkill' indeed. A director or the D-G should be handling this. Not a minister. But, luckily for all S'poreans, no DPM or PM intervened. I wonder if Tharman would have done the same if he was still minister of education.
